Shawn Brimley and Irving Lachow Join CNAS as Senior Fellows

Washington, October 2, 2012 — The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is pleased to announce that Shawn Brimley, former Director of Strategic Planning at the National Security Council, and Dr. Irving Lachow, former Principal Cyber Security Engineer at the MITRE Corporation, have joined the Center.

Mr. Brimley returns to CNAS as a Senior Fellow contributing to the Center's work on current conflicts and military and defense policy. He was previously a Fellow at the Center from 2007 to 2009 and was the inaugural recipient of the Center's Bacevich Fellowship. Dr. Lachow joins CNAS as a Senior Fellow and Director of the Program on U.S. National Security in the Information Age, which focuses on cyber security, Internet freedom and governance and other challenges at the intersection of technology and national security policy.

Mr. Brimley previously served as the Director of Strategic Planning at the National Security Council. Prior to that, he was Special Advisor to then-Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michèle Flournoy at the Department of Defense from 2009 to 2011. While at CNAS, his research focused on U.S. grand strategy, defense policy and current wars. He co-authored the highly influential 2008 CNAS report Shaping the Iraq Inheritance with Ms. Flournoy and CNAS Senior Fellow Dr. Colin Kahl.

Dr. Lachow recently served as a Principal Cyber Security Engineer at the MITRE Corporation, where he led and contributed to multiple projects in the area of cyber security for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Department of Defense's Chief Information Officer and the Department of Homeland Security. Prior to joining MITRE, Dr. Lachow was a Professor at the National Defense University's iCollege, where he developed and taught numerous courses focused on cyber issues.
