    Lieutenant General David W. Barno, USA (Ret.)
    Senior Advisor and Senior Fellow

    General Barno, a highly decorated military officer with over 30 years of service, has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the United States and around the world, to include command at every level. He served many of his early years in special operations forces with Army Ranger battalions, to include combat in both the Grenada and Panama invasions. In 2003, he was selected to establish a new three-star operational headquarters in Afghanistan and take command of the 20,000 U.S. and Coalition Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom. For 19 months in this position, he was responsible for the overall military leadership of this complex political-military mission, devising a highly innovative counterinsurgency strategy in close partnership with the U.S. embassy and coalition allies.

  • Dr. Nora Bensahel
    Dr. Nora Bensahel
    Deputy Director of Studies and Senior Fellow

    Dr. Nora Bensahel is Deputy Director of Studies and a Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security.  She recently co-authored Hard Choices: Responsible Defense in an Age of Austerity, and Sustainable Pre-eminence: Reforming the U.S. Military at a Time of Strategic Change. Her other research interests include stability operations, counterinsurgency, civilian capacity for operations abroad, and coalition and alliance operations. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Security Studies Program at the Edmund A.

  • Richard Fontaine
    President

    Richard Fontaine is the President of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). He served as a Senior Advisor and Senior Fellow at CNAS from 2009-2012.  He previously served as foreign policy advisor to Senator John McCain for more than five years.  He has also worked at the State Department, the National Security Council and on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

    U.S. policy is committed to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and the administration’s “dual track” policy of pressure and diplomacy aims to achieve that objective. Yet despite unprecedented international sanctions, Iran’s nuclear progress and support for terrorism and regional militancy continue. The CNAS Iran project, led by Senior Fellow Dr. Colin Kahl, former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, provides detailed assessments of the global and regional consequences of Iranian nuclearization and the full range of policy alternatives for addressing the threat.

    Military Personnel

    The U.S. strategic environment has changed radically since the end of World War II, yet American military personnel policies have largely gone unchanged for several decades. CNAS’ military personnel project will provide a long overdue reexamination of these policies. Military personnel policies profoundly affect service members’ decisions about joining and leaving the military, as well as the career paths that they choose to follow.

    The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) has worked on issues related to U.S. policy toward Central and South Asia since 2007. In 2010, CNAS completed a year-long project called Beyond Afghanistan project that examined U.S. interests in the region after the war in Afghanistan. CNAS also recently completed a report on the relationship between the United States and India. The aim of CNAS researchers is to combine our years spent working in the region with methodologically rigorous research to arrive at realistic options for U.S. policy makers.
