South and Central Asia

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) has worked on issues related to U.S. policy toward Central and South Asia since 2007. In 2010, CNAS completed a year-long project called Beyond Afghanistan project that examined U.S. interests in the region after the war in Afghanistan. CNAS also recently completed a report on the relationship between the United States and India. The aim of CNAS researchers is to combine our years spent working in the region with methodologically rigorous research to arrive at realistic options for U.S. policy makers.

    Patrick M. Cronin is a Senior Advisor and Senior Director of the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).  Previously, he was the Director of the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) at National Defense University and has a nearly 30-year career inside government and academic research centers, spanning defense affairs, foreign policy, and development assistance.

    Research Associate

    Zachary Hosford is a Research Associate at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). His research at CNAS centers on U.S. and Asia-Pacific defense and security policy, including weapons acquisition strategy and nuclear weapons policy. Some of his recent work has focused on the future of the U.S.-Japan alliance, China’s naval modernization, the U.S.-China nuclear relationship, South Korean defense capabilities and priorities, U.S. policy regarding North Korean nuclear activities and Aum Shinrikyo’s chemical and biological weapons programs.

    Robert Kaplan
    Non-Resident Senior Fellow

    Robert D. Kaplan has been a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security since March 2008, and has been a foreign correspondent for The Atlantic for over a quarter-century. He is currently Chief Geopolitical Analyst at Stratfor. He is the author of Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power, published by Random House in October, 2010, with the paperback to be released in September.
