Johnny Reb Marines in Beirut?

And for the WTFO Picture of the Day, we have the U.S. Marines marching through Beirut in 1958 with ... a Confederate flag.

Sean and I are trying to figure out the meaning of this. I guess this would make sense if this was an old state flag, but a) I don't think it is and b) the USMC doesn't have National Guard units, so it doesn't make sense why they would be marching with a state flag anyway. Nope, this is the Confederate Battle Flag, alright. Anyway, this is just ... weird.

Got a kick reading the

Got a kick reading the comments as to WTF is this. I was with F/2/2/2 and we went into Beirut in Amtracs prior to the rest of the 2nd Batt comin' in on the "Mike" and "Peter" landing craft. Our Third Platoon had a Stars And Bars flag and commonly displayed it as shown in the pix - always in a humorous or "In-Your-Face" air. In fact, other platoon guys used to "steal" it anytime they could. On one occasion our Weapons Platoon and Third Platoon had a formation on the deck of our ship, the LST 1164 Walworth County where our 2nd Lt. "Formally" returned the stolen flag.

It seemed like there was always reginal influences in the Corps, and the southern guys enjoyed their heritage. I remember the event shown in the picture, and don't recall any problems coming about because of it at that time.

Couple observations on some of the above comments. We had been on station with the 6th Fleet since late May in the event that a crisis would develop, and had been circling Cyprus when the call came to go in on July 15th. We were all on active duty - some were reserves - and assigned to the Fleet Marine Force. At Lejeune, the FMF also had another interpretation - Fightin' Mother F..........

Last point. One very quick and sure way to get an enomous amount of unwanted attention at the slop-shoot was to call any Marine "Boy".
