"And also oil mattered, not as a commercial matter but as a strategic matter, given that Iraq plus Kuwait produced a fifth of the world’s oil. Plus the demonstration effect, if you will, of Saddam being able to get away with taking Kuwait would have put the Saudis and others under his sway."

So, he's implying this is a LEGITIMATE reason to invade a country?

ROTFLM M/F AO!

BTW, Hussein didn't actually just go and 'take' Kuwait... Kuwait WAS slant drilling into the 'neutral zone', an area not even marked on most civilian maps and unknown even to most university geography students... That worked to the US government's PROPAGANDA advantage (especially PROPAGANDIZING their own people). Further, April Glaspie essentially washed the US State department and Military's hands of the affair like some sort of mafia doness kissing the ol' 'insane dictator' on the cheek, while leaving a black handprint (Muerta!) on his back.

Summation: The concept of CREATING (choice of words intentional) a "shooting war" because some other country might acquire extractive resources we need for 'national security' reasons yet would otherwise be unavailable without invading or using internal armed insurgents to destabilize (as we had been doing in Somalia and so many other places) a sovereign nation, is a mockery of international law and rejects the foundational building blocks of basic human social contracts.
