Consider this the antidote to watching Foust and Cohen (see below) debate Afghanistan for an hour on your computer monitors. I have often considered the Renée French scene in Coffee and Cigarettes to be the gold standard by which "women looking impossibly good while smoking a cigarette in a café" scenes have been measured. After watching Mélanie Laurent in Inglourious Basterds, I am now not so sure. So here they are, readers, head-to-head. You make the call.
Renée est la plus belle
Renée est la plus belle pour deux raisons: les lèvres et les jambes.
Clearly those who see the
Clearly those who see the world in black and white terms will prefer the first clip.
Love the fact that they both
Love the fact that they both HAVE to have accent grave in their names!
And of course it would have to be Renee French. Even the name is appropriately sexy.

We could consider it the anecdote, but wouldn't it make more sense to consider it the antidote?
Damn. Tough choice. In the
Damn. Tough choice. In the end I'd have to go with Mélanie Laurent. The accent was the deciding factor for me.
Renee french forever. She is

But Wu-Tang and Bill Murrey take the male price

Wow... Foust always sounded
Wow... Foust always sounded like a big D, but now I know he looks like one too.
Just have a post on
Just have a post on Inglourious Basterds already. It was awesome and we need to talk about it!
Renee French. A riddle...a
Renee French. A riddle...a sphinx. A damn good looking riddle-sphinx.
Her facial structure made the lights dim at Google a year or so ago--my searching actually, not hers. I was looking for info about her after watching C&C.
She has appeared in only one other film, Nowhere Fast. Which I haven't seen. It was apparently a very bad arthouse film written and directed by an actor who appeared in C&C and in Jarmusch's earlier, even more pretentiously dull, Mystery Train.
Miss sphinx plays a character named "Renee" throughout her filmography...including her previous stints as an intern and a PA.
Wild guesses as to her real life here: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/showthread.php?t=392412
The truth is bound to piss us off or bore us to death.
Gonna watch the segment again now.
I'm back.
One thing that bothered me about the movie is that most of the coffee consumed in the film does not appear to have any steam coming out of it. The actors are drinking tepid coffee.
What, JJ couldn't afford to hire a steam wrangler?

I just like women in hats.
I just like women in hats. plus the movie convinced me that her name is shoshana, and i've always liked that name. plus she incinerated a bunch of nat-see sumbitches
An indie movie about coffee
An indie movie about coffee and cigarettes? Sounds like something an Ivy League elitist would watch :) Nevertheless, my vote is for Renee French because she's hot and she's thumbing through a handgun magazine - be still my heart!
Anecdote/antidote... damn,
Anecdote/antidote... damn, you embarrassing typos! (Abu Muqawama learned to read through Hooked on Phonics.)I think I've discovered
I think I've discovered another advantage of being quite older than most in the blogosphere. I dated a lot of girls back in the day when smoking was still Very Cool. The images of women smoking that I have in my head vastly exceed both of these lovely clips because those images come from personal experience. (That experience leads me to question whether the actresses actually smoke off-camera; they handle the cigarettes just a bit awkwardly.) There's nothing quite like a girl smoking the hell out of a cigarette and she's within arm's reach. I would also recommend almost any scene with Lauren Bacall smoking. And Marilyn Monroe. That's almost more than a man can bear. Of course, your mileage may vary.
@Fnord I preferred the Tom
@Fnord
I preferred the Tom Waits/Iggy Pop scene, but that may be due to my man crush on Waits.
It is amazing (or pathetic)
It is amazing (or pathetic) that I still remember this thread, but I would have to add January Jones as Betty Draper to the list after this Sunday's (October 4, 2009) "Mad Men."
