A pretty apt comparison. I remember that they pushed the "Russians are blowing off kids hands with exploding toys because they have souls black as iron!" line pretty hard, and then it turned out that the kids were just playing with UXO... and they filmed it in the American southwest, which looked exactly nothing like Afghanistan.
Actually, compared to Rambo this movie'll probably be super-accurate and detailed.

Didn't the movie end with John Wayne and the boy sitting on the beach watching the sun setting in the east? Probably it seemed worse in 1968 than it does now.
From Wikipedia: "Thematically, The Green Berets is strongly anti-communist and pro-Saigon. It was produced in 1968, at the height of American involvement in the Vietnam War, the same year as the Tet offensive against the largest cities in southern Vietnam. John Wayne was prompted by the anti-war atmosphere and social discontent in the U.S. to make this film in countering that. He requested and obtained full military co-operation and matériel from President Lyndon Baines Johnson."

Hey you guys fair go, I mean the private security contractors, the engineer companies, the caterers , the owners if bottle water plants, not to mention the fixers, bag men, carpet baggers et al, all made their bucks out of the Green Zone, so why shouldn't Mr Damon and crew make a few reddies.

have to say after watching the International version the film look far more watchable. The different versions remind me of the Three Kings trailers. when the studio execs saw the final cut and realised Three Kings wasn't the gung ho war move they wanted they demanded a hare core shoot em up trailer to bag audiences that wouldn't want to see a film that might challenge them, even a tiny wee bit.

@Abu Visitor,
Well the first link took me to the daily staff meeting of the GZ and the conference call with DC.
The second link was me after I saw the Staff Meister/Jedi Knights at link one above. I finally broke down and cried.
No maybe that was me watching Casey explain (in fall 06) that the Iraqi "Army" would be ready in a year (ROLF).
No maybe that was my outbriefing.
No maybe that was me outprocessing personnel when they told me they just couldn't seem to find a valid enlistment contract for me for the time period out of which I was extended...
As for getting out, we walked out (in a hurry) before they could put together the "surprise party" for us. We didn't cry our way out of it. Really. Whaddya think I'm a sissy?
@schmedlap - dude you need to put some WARNING DON'T BE EATING OR DRINKING WHILE READING BELOW or something... I nearly goofed up my lunch onto the keyboard.

This actually not a lie. Wow. What can you really say about that. I guess if Rajiv says "holy crap who's book did you read" that'd make him a script consultant too.
""The Road" by John Hillcoat. Makes Cormac McCarthy's book look like an action thriller"
IIRC the trailer for The Road shows the wife being alive and involved in the story to boot. The Proposition was great, No Country was great on screen, this OTOH is gonna suck big time.

You will watch it because
You will watch it because most of America has gone Full Regards and most are mindless, don't care, have nothing better to do or are not educated well enough to know what's going on in the rest of the world. Most are internationally inept. They consume, spend money on things they don't need and support an endless cycle of moving up the ladder of increasing their upward social mobility. Is life all about Monopoly?
We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. What concerns me are the endless Hollywood movies of being a covert operative for the US Government, when most of these people will end up enlisting, get shipped off to war and find out the world is a F-ed up place and they will never fix it's problems, no matter if they are a Air Force, Army, Marine,Navy, a Agency Case Officer, Covert Operative.... whoever. They will never fix the world's problems no matter how much work and money is sunk into it. Even a $500 Trillion Dollar War.
F-&k Matt Damon. Matt's polishing the brass on the Titanic. It's all going down, man. So F-&k off with your Green Zone, Syriana, The Good Shepherd, The Bourne Monkey, ready to be flown into Iraq. Bourne Monkey! Ready to sacrifice himself for the greater good.
If you watch this film, 10 to 1 you'll go full retard and not only spend money to see it, you will buy popcorn and think one day... that could be up on the screen....or will desire to be a Warrant Officer / Covert / Secret or Special Operative for some retarded agency that's going to save the world. Yeah, right!
If you're reading this, you are the middle children of history. No purpose or place. You have no purpose, but to fuel a war that is lining the pockets of the wealthy or people who want to be wealthy. You've all been raised on movies to believe that one day you'll be a hero, will save the world. But you won't. And perhaps you're slowly learning that fact. And perhaps, if you're smart enough you'll start getting pissed off and do something about it.
Go watch the movie and then go enlist, raise your right hand and deny the fact that our country was based on the premise that decent is a right and should be practiced and cherished.
"Dissent" LMAOROTF....don't
"Dissent"
LMAOROTF....don't you mean? Good point though. We shouldn't see this film. We might go "full retard", like yourself and the other Bourne Monkey's fighting these wars & making money off them.
This website is filled with a lot of hate. Sorry, but you all need to get a life.
"...our country was based on
"...our country was based on the premise that decent is a right and should be practiced and cherished..."
Yeah dissent, regardless no doubt of merit or logic. BTW the quote attributed to Jefferson that dissent is the highest form of patriotism ...well Jefferson never said that.
A 90's radical did. Snope it.
Yes, Jefferson never said
Yes, Jefferson never said that, Zinn did. Interesting how facts and quotes can easily be twisted by people with an agenda or goal. Isn't it?
Take the Kennedy assassination conspiracies and J. Edgar Hoover being a transvestite. Oleg Kalugin and his goon squad fabricated those lies, just like Zinn fabricated his.
Dissent isn't something that is bad, it's just a different perspective. When someone lies or fabricates to change opinion or gain public approval, brainwash other's, then that's bad. That's obvious. Bring a radical and spreading propaganda, if it damages another person or hurts others....bad again. Especially, if it uses violence.
Constructively, we can all learn from dissent. As long as its controlled, allows for debate and is focused.
I think the person above was trying to say how expensive the war has cost the United States of America. Not only in lives, but money and socially, as a society. We've lost a lot of doctors, Pulitzer Prize winners, mothers, fathers, grandchildren that will never be born. One of them could have been a Nobel Prize winner, but then we will never know. One of these people or their children could have had the cure for cancer, AIDS, Herpes... (elf- sure you can appreciate that, right?).
When you have to pay thousands of people, mercenaries, food / fuel delivery people, program management contractors and increase salaries for those who serve in these combat locations over $200,000 a year, you have to ask yourself..... Is it really worth it?
Elf, what we've done in Iraq, so far, has it been worth is?
If so, can you provide us a short list of goals the United States and the Iraqi people have obtained?
Has a democratic rule of law been embraced? Will it ever?
Lastly, when do you think the violence will stop? How many more years?
I don't post very often, but I can tell you're a very intelligent person Elf. Any answer to the questions above would be appreciated.
Thanks and have a nice Halloween..
The better to hear you with,
The better to hear you with, my dear.
What we accomplished in Iraq: we got rid of (shelf life expired with 9/11) Saddam. Thereby removing a major irritant to the region, who may or may not have been into a possibly evolving relationship with terrorists. Who definitely was not liked by most of his neighbors cuz they never knew what he was going to do. And he had a decent sized Army to do it with...who turned out to be surprisingly capable once they stopped trying to play ball like us.
We eliminated a (turned out to be mostly defunct except for the retained Human Capital) WMD program. Let's not revisit the entire debate, please, I admit the intel was wrong. We didn't know that, Saddam fooled everyone.
It had the immediate consequences however of getting Libya to drop it's WMD program pronto, and Iran to temporarily halt (partially) it's nuke program.
We have introduced the viruses of democracy, a free press - in Iraq very free and very lively - into the body politic of the Middle East and into the heart of the Arab world, and there have already been repercussions throughout the region - in Lebanon, Iran, and into (mostly disappointed) democrats and activists throughout the region. Whether or not the anti-bodies of repression, dictatorship, monarchy and backwards looking religious fanaticism expel or destroy liberal ideas - we'll see.
The rule of Law being embraced. Well, it's more lawful under the current shaky democracy than under the Tikriti mafia, but yeah let's not get too optimistic here.
The violence stopping - I think violence is part of human nature and war part of our condition and will never end, it just has to be managed down to a dull roar. We'll never get rid of it completely. No it's not going to die completely down for awhile. However in Iraq we have gotten it down to say levels of --Burma-- as it was under Saddam down to say...Lebanon. I also think Iraq isn't going to invade neighbors for awhile -remember - the Iran/Iraq war killed a million, and even the Kuwait adventure killed upwards of 140,000. Mostly Iraqi's.
And not least by far for US interests -- we stumbled into inflicting with Sunni Arab help - a near total defeat militarily and ideologically of Al Qaeda. Discrediting their brand globally. They helped a lot, of course by descending into frenzied bloodlust.
Oh and I learned a new word - Takfiri. And I learned they aren't all monsters, in fact most aren't. As I was around for the ..man made disaster a few years ago..that wasn't easy.
May we all learn that term. Makes it easier all around.
The loss of funds - not to be snarky, but if you think the Military wastes funds, have you seen the rest of US Gov in action? More like inaction? See current stimulus job math. Yes I'm sure USG/AIG and Goldman Sachs would have spent it more wisely.
Ok, that was snarky. Don't take it personally, I can't stand the govt these days.
The loss of people - a sad part of war. War is inevitable. We're flawed.
I'm intelligent. Many people would take exception to that, including me.
Happy Halloween back.
