I was wondering about some

I was wondering about some of the terms used in the translation (not only in this document) and why we are actually doing this practice because it has consequences in any attempt to reconciliate religions.
"Allah" is a transliteration of the Arabic script and means "God". Last time I checked Islamic history it is the same God Jews and Christians are looking up to. The "Jihad" transliteration means "Struggle", mostly in the context of struggling to be a good believer in God. You language experts can correct me here.
My point is that though transliteration and creation of a new term for something that already has a term in our society we are creating an artificial difference that really doesn't exist. For the common person that doesn't have the time to study this it creates a barrier between religions and a picture of an enemy that - for all idealistic purposes - shouldn't be an enemy.
I think the same practice is very effectively used by the "other side".
Don't get me wrong, I'd still shoot back if given the opportunity, but we have to distinguish between religious nutcases (which we have in all religions), the mislead or misinformed accidental guerilla and the general casual believer. This isn't a religous war, it is a war for territory and people control. Maybe I should rephrase: This isn't a war between believers and non-believers of God, it's a war for territory and people control. Our mission (last time I checked) was to disable AQ, maybe replace some of the damage we and our predecessors did in Afghanistan, provided we are allowed to do that. We are not running a "crusade" against Islam which seems to be the picture that the Taliban are painting us as to the locals.
Maybe there is an opportunity here to disarm the situation by clearing up the misconceptions here, both in the US and Afghanistan.

I think you bring up some

I think you bring up some important points in your post, Bender. On the other hand, Eric Wu's post is completely uncalled for. Last I checked, we were trying to solve complex security issues here, not preach genocide.

I agree with Bender. I

I agree with Bender. I always cringe when I see people either write or say "Allah" rather than just "God," especially in a derogatory manner. We wonder why so many Muslims polled believe that we're fighting a war against Islam when our commentators regularly use language that implies that there are Muslims, who believe in Allah, something unlike our God that we should all demonize. The use of foreign words just makes the entire religion seem dark and murky.

On the manual: interesting that they forbid kidnapping for ransom. I wonder what David Rhode would have to say about that.

More generally, I wonder what Mao would say about this tract.

@ Raoul- This particular

@ Raoul-

This particular document is a product of the folks led by the Quetta Shura and Mullah Omar. David Rohde was kidnapped by people that reportedly were more closely linked to the Haqqani Network, which at this point is less focused on building a positive image with the international community (or Afghans, for that matter). It's a small but important point: We need to strike the word 'Taliban' from our lexicon and only speak to specific militant coalitions. 'Taliban' is no longer useful because it does not provide any analytical clarity about the motivations or capabilities of the violent groups operating in Af/Pak.
