The BBC reports that thousands of people turned up for the funerals of victims of the suicide attack on Shia worshippers in Karachi.
...Keep watching this space.
UPDATE: AFP reports that the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Also, Karachi is still on fire after angry Shia rampaged following the bomb.
"We carried out the suicide bombing in Karachi," Asmatullah Shaheen, a top militant commander based in South Waziristan, told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location. Shaheen, whose name is on a government list of 19 most-wanted militants, said "he (the bomber) was our man; his name was Hasnain Muawia".
Interestingly, Muawia is the name of the first caliph of the Umayyad Dynasty. He fought Ali, the Prophet Mohammed's cousin, who is revered by Shia as his rightful successor. Muawia's son Yazid is seen as the villain in the events that led to the death of the prophet's grandson Hussain. The Shia worshippers targeted by the Taliban were commemorating Hussain's death at the hands of Yazid's forces when the bomber struck.

2010 is going to be an interesting year. Mid-term elections in the US. Unrest in Pakistan. Rising level of disagreement in Iran. I find Iran interesting. Each side makes an incremental increase in the violence. Now the leadership is talking executions (not new, they already went there). The Iranian government is doing all the things that COIN tells us not to do. The interesting part is it Islam dealing with Islam. This is playing out the concept that radical islam has come full circle and is looking at itself face-to-face.

That is also a capability the U.S. would like the Yemenis to eventually develop the official said"
Almost sounds like the lead up to the story line for Black Hawk Down II.

Yeah, while at the same time bombing Iran, invading Yemen and restoring its own economy. No problem, since you have all these imaginary fantasy-soldiers. Fck, who needs reality? Its all just Risk. Consequence analysis, hell no, its not the american way. And so on.

China picked up contracts in Iraq for oil and now copper in Afghanistan. China is making a high bid to get the contracts, while the US taxpayer/military enables the deal.
The US will pay again when the higher material cost is passed on to the consumer in the manufactured product. This would not have happened twenty years ago, times have changed, it is about profit.
Globalization.
Well, fnord, the Pakistani
Well, fnord, the Pakistani Shia and Sunni (as well as Sufi) clerics agree on one important point: that you're Gay. During Friday sermons they usually talk about how Gay you are. And during Ashura they think of you while bloodying themselves and thumping their chests to the beat of "YMCA". Yes, they have photos of you and your many ex gfs throughout Pakistan and the Autonomous Territories.
I thought the reason we are
I thought the reason we are sacrificing our youngs in Iraq and Afghanistan was so China and Iran can get ahead, Zak.
Chinese investment is good
Chinese investment is good news. Yes, they get ahead, but its not like they aren't going to get ahead regardless, not with 8 percent growth in the midst of the recession. On the other hand, Chinese investment will improve Afghanistan. We can provide the military side, but we aren't terribly good at doing development. American companies are too terrified to do business in country, so the only people putting money in are NGOs. China is unafraid to do the necessary investment, so they will create actual jobs and wealth. Increased standards of living will help counteract the despair and disenfranchisement that led to the Taliban and fundamentalism.
Also, well though out argument Bostonstani. It will be difficult for anyone to dispute that.
China should also provide
China should also provide their surplus of comfort women to the wider counterinsurgency struggle. China can send their uglier ones to countries like Nigeria, Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Their not so ugly massage therapists to countries like Oman, Bahrain, the UAE and the Kingdom. But reserve China's most delectable morsels for NATO and American forces who are sacrificing and shedding blood for a cause we are not even benefitting from. If China and Iran are going to profit from our blood, our troops should atleast get some fucky-fucky out of this--it's only right.
And we can send fnord, HALO train him, drop him into the middle of Pashtunistan so those smelly bearded illiterate backward fucks can make sweet prison love to him, thus providing fnord the opportunity to tell his wild ex-girlfriend stories ala One Thousand and One Nights.

Have no problem with Chinese investment, good for them. I have a problem with the US taxpayer subsidizing the growth of the Chinese economy. The eight percent growth that your talking about is in large part due to the trade imbalance between China and the US. The interest on the $800 billion in US debt has so many zero's now , it is hard for me to count. Why? It is because many of the US industries adopted a new business model in the early 90's, the beginnings were much earlier. Walmart took the new model to heart and ran with it, profit and growth soared. Everyone was running away from the benefits that US industry promised their workers. You can really see the effect in the electronics industry. For the first time in 2004, the Asian rim produced more semiconductors parts than the US, the US created the industry. It is all profit driven. It is not free-market when a company can purchase ten workers in China for the price of one in the US. This is what has created the trade imbalance today. Instead of shipping hard goods to China, we balance the books by giving them US debt. Chinese linked their currency to the US dollar, so that the trade imbalance would not hurt their investment. A few businessmen make enormous profits on off-shoring, the rest of America and our children will pay in the form of less opprotunity and higher taxes(health care, government jobs, military protection to stabilize the world market place).
Development? US is too good at it, especially if there is a 20-30% return for share holders and a big bonus for the board and CEO. Look at India and the Asian rim. Most of the technology was US driven. The development dollars were US. America put the Asian rim into business. It is about emerging markets, creating sales and making markets.
American companies scared of AF? Look at the contractors (not just the guns for hire, but the truck drivers, laundry, food serve) in Afghanistan. American companies are their in a big way, not paid by AF, but by the US taxpayer! It is not just America companies, and this is the reason I say that radical islam has come full circle and is looking at itself, included are the ME-petrodollars which have been invested into business and stock markets world wide.
I have done business with the Chinese, if they are interested in what you have, it is because they can not get it at home. Once they have it, you're no longer part of their plan.
Not against the war in the ME, I am against being stupid. It is time for the rest of the world to buck up with their share. I am tired of giving a few individuals so much wealth that it will support the next sixteen generations of their family.
Read "Too Big to Fail". Think the US taxpayer has bailed out the banks about five times! First was TARP, then the insurance money from AIG for the CDO's, the zero percent Federal Reserve loans have been fueling bank profits in the form of Carry Trades (if you leverage 1:15, you can get a 45% return from a 4.5% investment on your hard money......the taxpayer is giving up interest in their savings accounts so the banks can have a 45% return!), when unemployment peaked the banks anounced that they were going to off-shore service jobs, the Federal Reserve is accepting toxic debt as collateral, and the commercial real estate loans are smelling a little sour so there is no doubt in my mind that the banks are writting still unregulated credit default swaps
to cover their butts. All in an industry that is back in full faith of the US taxpayer. All the banks cleared the TARP off the books by the end of 2009 and bonuses are good. Same profit driven mentality is off-shoring American jobs. Same as the bad bank loans, everyone involved in off-shoring benefits with huge returns, except the worker and the taxpayer (they are one and the same).
Look around you, where is the money? It is in retirement accounts and pension funds of the older people. That money is tapped and leveraged. If you can add in the full faith of the US taxpayer, you have a wick amount of cash to work with. While it lasts.
Globalization, who pays. Time to rethink the plan. Bring the jobs home.
Nicely said, Zak. But what
Nicely said, Zak. But what do you think about Chinese Massage Parlors in South Asia, the Near East and Africa as another prong to our wider Pop-centric COIN and CT strategy against these Islamo-fascists?

Americans are a sleep at the wheel, lazy, and on cruise control. Not guilty? How's your Visa balance? It is your job to say no.........more.
Have to laugh about the Panty Bomber. Not because I think it is funny. Because we let it happen. Father told the CIA. Ticket paid in cash. Traveler had no luggage. The warnings are all there. What do we come up with? OH, we did not fund the full body scan. Not MY fault, lets analze this more and drop a few more million dollars. Lets not talk about us not doing our jobs, you know how complicated screening is. Blame shift, blame shift.
Folks, we are paying the bureaucrats in Washington six figure salaries for this. For the life-time staffers, we pay their pension and health care for the rest of their lives. Sweet deal.
This is way I am laughing..... really it is a muttled sobbing.

While the bureaucrats in Washington make six-figure salaries. Lifers get that salary plus health care benefits for the rest of their lives. I laugh at the Panty Bomber, not because I think it is funny, because we let it happen. The warnings were there, his father talked to the CIA, ticket was paid in cash, there was no luggage checked. Bureaucrats are not doing there well paid jobs. Blame shift. Denial. Come up with weak execuses, it is so hard to sort through the information? Look, they are getting paid well to sort through the information! There is no excuse. Sweet set up in Washington. I would like to see Obama's travel expenses term-to-date...plus the State dinner cost (couldn't they do it the SD in the WH?). Think folks would love to vacation in the WH, yet that is not good enough. Hawaii, Chicago, Restuarants? He has a 24/7 staff to feed him?

1. There are hundreds of fathers, uncles, moms, friends, colleagues, etc. that report people everyday.
2. Because fraud is so rampant in W. Africa (or Africa in general) people usually pay cash for big ticket items.
3. Because it's such a hassle checking in luggage these days (to include theft as you've pointed out), most people don't bother bringing them or they just ship them off.
Those aren't really as red a flag as you think. The important point here is the Dept. of State's ability to revoke their own damn visa. Because we've added so many more levels of bureaucracy, the State Department can't even revoke their own visas anymore, they have to go through the hoops. In the simpler days before 9/11, we had Defense, State, the FBI (domestic) and the CIA (foreign). The problem was getting everybody to play nice and share. The solution was not to create more layers.
Since we now have realized that the government can't really protect us from these singletons, the government should train the public on excusable homicide laws. There's no reason why the Shoe Bomber and the Underoo Bomber are still alive.

Sorry for the double post. The first one took about a half hour to load, thought it was lost.
Think you proved my point, why are we paying bureaucrats six figure salaries and life time benefits?????
The luggage thing is a little spooky, baggage docks are secured areas. Employees are suppose to have gone through clearance checks. That alone should have had Congressmen spun-up. I wrote my Congressman about it and never got a reply! Guess he was too busy fixing the problem.
Flags I spoke of could have been handled by the carrier at check in, their system would understand a cash purchase and no luggage. The customer should have automatically dropped to "SSSSS" (Selectee) and gotten frisked. Foreign countries do closer checks. They have booths to the side that they do the search in.
Yes, we both agree with the
Yes, we both agree with the fat bureaucrats.
Luggage theft has been around for quite awhile now. Somebody should look into thefts of cell phones, wallets, purse, and other small items (many times laptops) by TSA personnel while passengers go through screening.
When you speak of the third world, 'closer checks', 'frisked', 'booths to the side' are all negotiable. I don't know if you can really blame our bureaucrats for this, maybe you can, but it's reaching.
But we do agree that less is more and what we had pre-9/11 was sufficient, just a matter of getting them to work together. All we need are Defense (for War), State (for Peace), FBI (for domestic) and CIA (for foreign). No need for other layers as we've seen, things just fall in the cracks with more layers.
Ditto. Question I have is,
Ditto.
Question I have is, once we drop the money for full body scans, then what are we going to do for body cavities? It is simple enough to avoid the departure lounge all together, go for the luggage.
Point is, we keep spending money, with layers of security. Each layer has a counter measure, easy enough to get around. Nothing is 100% and we are blowing money left and right. The terrorist job is to maximize the money wasted and the freedoms lost and his job is done, he does not have to kill anyone.
Yet, the basic security levels are not being implemented correctly(ie. stuff we spoke of). Seems to me, the job is to focus on the basics and become excellent. Make the terrorist waste their treasure getting around our intel.
See the Delta CEO promised us better security. What was he doing before? Same for Washington. Good thing Congress has their priorities on health care....we might need it (that is if we can afford in five years...maybe we can make use of all the full body scan equipment for health care when it is obsoleted by cavity searches.)
I want a rebate on my taxes going back to 9/11 ! Claw back on the salaries.
Problem with being able to afford something is being stupid enough to waste your money.
