Perhaps if we paid as much attention to cultural anthropology, depth psychology and comparative theology -- all of which open windows on the workings of mind and heart -- as we do to force projection, not only would Mosab Hassan Yousef's sudden reversal of loyalties be easier to understand, but so would the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in which it is embedded, and more generally still, issues feeding into the recruitment, practices and successful deradicalization of jihadists.
In the case of Yousef, for instance, Jung's concept of enantiodromia would explain the psychology of sudden reversal. Other relevant ideas might include Victor Turner's concept of liminality, and the comparative religious topic of conversion. But saying that just skips a pebble across the surface of the issue -- I'll be very interested to read Yousef's book, to see what can be gleaned within the text and between the lines...
Similarly, notions of sacred space in the Abrahamic religions will prove indispensable in any attempt to resolve the Jerusalem issue (and specifically the issue of control of the Temple Mount / Noble Sanctuary) -- and are of pressing importance today in view of the recent announcement that Israel will name the Cave of the Patriarchs (in the West Bank) a national (Israeli) heritage site.
