Good post.....these guys have a hard job to do.
On MTP he condemned the use
On MTP he condemned the use of torture in the Bush Administration????? What an idiot...
If he was so strong to make that statement, why didn't protest or stop it when he was in charge? Petraeus was responsible for thousands of POW's.....what a chicken-shit statement - after that fact.
Sounds like he's looking for a book deal and a university teaching job, like a few of his friends. I don't think he has political ambitions after that statement (he knows better), but I do think he wants to cause a media surge, get a book deal and then retire to some quiet university in the mid-Atlantic or south. I don't think West Point will take him and....he probably looking for warmer weather..looking for Ivy League....people who are gullible.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Petraeus get a job at a big University like Mr. Duke - http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/2009/09/anthony_zinni_o/
Funny part is, I think if Petraeus tried to get a political job with this Administration he would end up just like Tony... "feeling like Charlie Brown, after Lucy yanks the football away".
You have to pick side's early, or don't pick side's at all. Petraeus is trying to jump sides and he's going to end up on his face.
Bingo. DoD personnel should
Bingo.
DoD personnel should never get involved with any "extracurricular activities", and as far as our current threats go, there isn't any need to even discuss those by other agencies an option.
Abu Ghraib came about ultimately because of pee poor leadership who didn't supervise, and didn't get it into their soldier's brains that if the OGA types ask for "help" stay the eff away. Far, far away. One NG unit had good leaders and said no. The next...
And for closing Gitmo, people need to listen to the General's words and he's got it right. And they're pretty much in line with Sen Graham and that group. They all want Gitmo closed, but they have to find a place that (a) gets past both local and national NIMBY issues; (b) will be in a Federal appellate court that is more amenable to the executive position; (c) is secure, and (d) (and MOST importantly) no matter where the new facility is located, they need to be assured that for those who are considered (un)lawful combatants, overzealous judges won't force themselves upon the process, preventing the interrogation of combatants under some theory the civil court structure should be involved, and create a situation where the (long, long, long standing) practice of military tribunals, or holding combatants until the end of hostilities, those not put into the criminal track (at least right away), and attempt to interject the judicial branch into the executive branch's constitutionally protected exclusive position of executing the national defense policies, fighting our wars .
If they can get buy in from Congress, and based on the post-Scott Brown climate it should, then all they need is to feel comfortable they can push through any activist judges and have a fully functioning system that allows us the full spectrum of legal powers and war powers: (a) tried in civil courts (b) tried before military tribunals (c) held indefinitely until the end of hostilities (some of which may come from group b). Obviously group c will need some sort of mechanism, maybe akin to the parole process (one already is going on more or less anyway) since we don't have another nation state to say "uncle" on their behalf.
Do all this Gitmo could close tomorrow. FWIW, I joked about Johnston Atoll last year (and then 2 weeks later we sent Uighars to Palau and Bermuda) but there are some islands in the Great Lakes, squarely in the 7th Circuit that might fit the bill. Besides when Joe American is asked "what is our max secure prison" I bet 90% say Alcatraz instead of Florence, Co or Marion, Il. When people see a prison on an island, they think safety. It's the way we've been raised after being bombarded with that message on cable TV, books and movies for years. Might be a better route than Thomson, Il. Worked (2nd award oops) for Napoleon. Did it for Jefferson Davis too.
Heck I'll even offer one up
