Great speech, but I'm more curious as to how the talk with Karzai went.

It was about time he made the trip.

I would not have believed it possible that he could be more full of himself, but somehow he is....

I didn't listen to the speech. I did question, though, what/who the intended audience(s?) of the speech were/are. Is this a milder equivalent of wearing a flight suit and declaring "Mission Accomplished"? I'll wade into partisan politics, and acknowledge I voted for the man, so I'm inclined to say "No," and I certainly don't think he (1) is a Jamaican jerkoff, or (2) could not be more full of himself. That having been said, was this more to help advance his domestic agenda by portraying himself as a "war president," with soldiers as props, than it was to influence "facts on the ground" by meeting with Karzai?

We all have our opinions. The heck of it is that the US is split 50-50.
I liked Reagan a lot better, not to say that I want to clone him and bring him back. He was the correct person for the time.
What I liked about Reagan era was that we were all Americans.....and there was opprotunity. Worked hard and there was a future. The trickle down stopped with offshoring of jobs, the middle class got exported. Not sure who to blame for the real estate melt down....we all got on that band wagon.
Our country has never been so divided. It is becoming a problem. I can not say that I like the path we are being led down. We all cannot work for Uncle Sam. If I start a business and work hard....not sure if I will see the return so why spend the money and take the risk? Unemployment is a problem and with the unrest and division, I do not see the jobless rate changing.
We are stronger united. Obama is not leading from the center.

Your comment is polite, considerate and well-stated, but nonetheless, with all due respect, an example of why it is unwise for me to wade into partisan politics.

Timing seems right. I mean,
Timing seems right. I mean, Karzai goes to China to sign a trade partnership agreement, almost the next day Obama makes surprise visit to Kabul. Does the administration feel like they are being played a fool here? I think that Obama's ego is a little bit bruised in the sense that the Afghan government isn't signing deals with the US or US allies. And, it is all nicely guised under a blanket of 'you aren't doing enough to fit corruption.'
Can we switch Karzai for
Can we switch Karzai for Obama? Karzai seems more modest, down to earth and practical.
We have not begun to be divided. I hope the Libs realize they passed a law designed to pummel private insurance - oh other than the favored state Oligopolies - out of existence to force us to accept a public option that's....
That's not there.
I guess that's the Precipice of fundamental change our leader just led us over. You know what's over the edge of the precipice?
A Gorge called "Western New York State". I should know, I crawled out of there. See the movie "The Descent"?**
Seriously kids...WTF did you do?
**kick ass chicks make me so hot. I'll still eat them if I have to...and I may.
Lol, you all seem to accept
Lol, you all seem to accept as a fact the meme that your president is just a vainglorious egoist. From a democratic pov, he seems to be coldly result oriented. And the visit is propably calculated to do several things at once: Establish his authority as wartime president, boost morale of troops and of Karzai, underscore the point that the war is more important than Israel and remind the republicans who is boss of the US.
"..remind the republicans
"..remind the republicans who is boss of the US..."
The People. The People are sovereign in the United States. Over their government. We're the "boss".
Interesting that you spelled "republicans" with a small "r". The idiom is that indicates not a political party but a type of government that has no King .
The boss of US: yes he does act like a cross between a Chicago corrupt machine pol and Flava Flav on a sober streak. With just enough bobo snark to endear him to DC's core demographic (snarky skinny bureaucrats and lobbyist lawyers).
Out in the rest of America it's not going down so well. Our throats.
This country has not been so divided and simultaneously deeply aroused and engaged since 1860. And he's no Lincoln.
More like Allende every day.

Do the troops have the
Do the troops have the option of not attending? I've always thought filling the background with cops or troops etc was an abuse of power. I especially dislike the specific positioning of ethnic minorities and women. In a better world the troops would make gang signs behind his back, wave to their Moms or have a nap and put an end to this practice.
I also love the hypocrisy of complaining about Afghan corruption when the US federal deficit is over $ 1 trillion and climbing.
BTW what will happen if Afghan corruption continues. Will Obama announce or even hint at a withdrawal before the next Presidential election? No chance because he would fear being accused of 'cutting and running". Karzai and his crew are home free especially if Obama is replaced by a Republican- who would have to be "pro-National Security State" to win the nomination.
Obama's demand for the end of Afghan corruption is pure political theater aimed at his own party. Many left wing dems are against the war and thought they were getting a president who would stand up to the MIC. They were obviously wrong but Obama has to throw them a bone in the hope they support him in the same numbers in 2012, hence the carefully parsed 2011 withdrawal time line and calls for ending corruption. Neither will happen.
I thought it was a good
I thought it was a good speech, timed to take a break from domestic issues and put a little focus on a nonpartisan front. Not a stirring speech but the troops liked it and the Pres. spoke with sincerity and not affectation. The rage expressed in the aftermath of the health care bill, however, is quite interesting; apparently one cannot even go to freaking *Afghanistan* (or this very blog) to escape the vitriol thrown by "our dissatisfied countrymen".
One could find good material analyzing our current politics within the context of a domestic insurgency. The Republican Party is acting less like a minority coalition during a cycle and more like the resistance to an occupying power. Same tactics, same organizational structure, same "violence vs. reconstruction" handicap.
We need to finish the job
We need to finish the job that we started in Afganistan. The problems with the taliban today was caused by the vacuum left after the Russians left.
