From a very good review essay in the Financial Times covering some new books on the Dreyfus Affair:
The atavistic impulse that spawned the Dreyfus affair, Begley warns, is as malignly robust as ever. Like Emile Zola, Begley deplores the current wisdom that a nation can protect itself from subversion by subverting decency, due process and the liberties on which it was founded. He frets about a future that lacks Dreyfusards. “Will there be,” he asks, “men and women ready to defend human rights, and the dignity of every human life, against abuse wrapped in claims of expediency and reasons of state?”
Yes, actually. There is, happily, more than a little Émile François Zola in Jane Mayer.
Excellent points, let's hope
Excellent points, let's hope that the Obama administration and the American public in general take these messages to heart and justice will prevail over the need to "go forward" and bi-partisanship.
1) An investigation with teeth regarding torture is needed.
2) Abu Gharaib needs to be revisited and Donnie Rumsfeld needs to be questioned accordingly.
3) Release all the photos
4) The new Iraqi President killed at least 6 men in cold blood on one occasion, this needs to be mentioned more.
5) When civilians die in Afghanistan, more than a weak mea culpa is needed.

@ 10:22AM: On number 5, I'm not sure what your point is, but if you are operating under the assumption that every instance of civilian casualties implies a violation of the laws of armed conflict, you are mistaken. Soldiers can follow the law scrupulously and civilians will still die in war. It is part of war's tragedy, and part of the cost that must be weighed before launching one.
If you mean something else, perhaps you could clarify.

Nada Prouty's identity was once a closely held national secret. She was an FBI agent, then a CIA officer with top security clearances who penetrated terrorist organizations overseas. Her fellow CIA officers say she risked her life often, volunteering for dangerous missions. And because she's originally from Lebanon, she speaks native Arabic, a rare skill for an American intelligence officer.
But Prouty's daring career was destroyed. In those years after 9/11 when rooting out terrorists at home was an obsession at the Justice Department, federal prosecutors launched investigations and even Prouty was accused of supporting terrorism. Was a traitor exposed? Or did America lose a patriot?
Now, former undercover CIA officer Nada Prouty steps out from the shadows to tell her story for the first time.

Woah, this is a really intense story. I just linked to it on Twitter. Pretty amazing, though, and terribly sad."Too often these days,
"Too often these days, panicked governments are undermining citizens rights and freedom in the name of battling crime and terrorism."
One should consider a different conclusion; something along these lines:
"Too often these days, well prepared factions, political parties and their governments, when presented with an appropriate opportunity, are using this opportunity to undermine citizens rights and freedom in the name of battling crime and terrorism. When, in truth, their agenda transcends these problems -- problems which they find useful in achieving their true ends.
Thus, these governments may not be "panicked" in the least. Quite the contrary, they are "well prepared."
