2nd Lt. Janell Peske, USMC
On 11 September 2001, as I was at Fort Drum, New York, trying to get my light infantry platoon ready to deploy to war, a young girl in southern California vowed to her mother that she would one day "serve her country" in the military. I got to know both mother and daughter after leaving the U.S. Army, and I am as proud as I could possibly be to congratulate that "young girl", Janell Peske, on her graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy today. Janell graduates with a degree in Arabic, something unthinkable 10 years ago, and even took a year to study in Jordan, which just goes to show you how far the service academies have come since 2001.
I remember when I was commissioned, 10 years ago this week at the Union Club of Philadelphia, and as I talk to Janell and other young lieutenants, I cannot help but think this newest crop of officers is immeasurably better prepared for what they are getting into than I ever was. As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we should give thanks not only for those who have fallen on the field of honor but for all the simply amazing young men and women who continue to volunteer to serve in and officer our armed forces. They continue to be the very best of us, and just as it was an honor to have walked alongside them for a few years in an otherwise misspent youth, I am deeply humbled by their sense of duty and sacrifice as well as the seriousness with which they take the most important job you could ever give to a 21-year old.

Perhaps an exaggeration of the abilities and qualities of the military is part of the reason we regularly get stuck in quagmires- see Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan for what the "Best and Brightest" have got us.

Start talking to Naval Academy alumni who are working for L3, SAIC, BAE, NG, CACI, etc. cuz that's where the money's at. But then again, your future's already set with CNAS, I suppose.
Keep your eye on the DC prize, and stay safe. When there's war, there's money, but you have to wait til you get out of the Suck to start earning it.
Oh, and start taking notes for your book, everyone who's anyone writes a good "memoir". Just try not to make it gay like that guy who boxed his CO in Afghanistan. Look into Billy Wambaugh's book, now that's a bad mofo OR Dick Holm's book, he's a real bad mofo too.

Amen. I'll host a Guiness to the memory of Pat Tillman, who displayed more integrity with his life, than his entire chain-of-command (Democrats & Republicans) ever did with the way they've treated him and his family by lying about his friendly-fire death. So much for Army "values." Last year, I wasn't impressed with the white-wash of Gen. McChrystal by President Obama and the Democratic Senate (and those at CNAS). McChrystal fabricated Tillman's Silver Star and led the Army's cover-up.

Thank you for your post in recognizing the newly-commissioned officers of the United States Military. I will be commissioning in August as a 2LT in the U.S. Army, and I will try to follow your lead in being a smart, capable, and dedicated leader for my soldiers and for my country. I can tell you that my fellow cadets who are commissioning with me hold the same beliefs and values that I do.
Also, I enjoy reading your blog immensely. I am definitely going to recommend that my soldiers follow, on occasion, your blog and the many others by writers who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq. I think they contribute to greater understanding to the larger mission we in the military currently face.
