Greg Carlstrom noticed that the AFC managed to squeeze Iran, Iraq and North Korea into the same group in January's Asia Cup. (Plus the UAE, which is surely wondering what it did to deserve getting lumped in with the original Axis of Evil.) My prediction is the Pentagon will deploy Landon Donovan & Co. to Abu Dhabi to take care of these jokers once and for all ... but, true to form, it will only plan for the first ten minutes of each game, abandon the field for 70 minutes and then rush everyone back into the stadium with ten minutes left in order to secure a hard-fought draw and spare the United States and its allies blushes. Bob Bradley will play a 4-3-3 in the final ten minutes of the game, which Andrew Bacevich will say is unsustainable in the long term (and demand to know how long stoppage time will be) and which Gian Gentile will say is exactly the same as the 4-4-2 we were using in 2006 and, besides, probably won't work anyway. The U.S. public (too busy eating Cheeze-Its, whining about their taxes and playing FIFA Soccer 10 on their X-Boxes to pay much attention to the actual game being played in the Middle East) will wonder whether or not the soccer game was worth it in the first place, but that won't prevent Team USA from having to endure round after tedious round of Lee effing Greenwood on its return stateside.

Seems to me more likely that the Pentagon will want to stay out. Already in it pretty deep in the Afghanistan game.
Instead, the State Department will supply the team... they'll pick you and your friends at CNAS to play for America. Naturally, to avoid alarming the other team, you will be forbidden from advancing past midfield; instead your orders will be to run around trying to convince the other team that if they would be like you, and just stand on defense, the game would end in a tie. And isn't a tie the only fair outcome? Especially given that America has Donovan? I mean, we can win if we want, right?
Only after your team is inexplicably driven down by four goals, as the wogs fail to grasp your advanced peacemaking logic, will America will get pissed and send in the Pentagon's team. Donovan will score 4 goals to tie the game, of course resulting in State prevailing on the President to pull him out of the game. The enemy will win in overtime.
The lesson from all this will be carefully drawn: next game, our State Department team should try harder to convince the enemy to play for a tie. To do that, they'll be allowed to advance the ball past midfield to get attention. But not, of course, to shoot on goal!

Is that really what you, Spencer PlateGlasstoughguyman, and the rest of the DC it crowd think of us?
As you feast on our taxes. If you can't pay your taxes you go on academia dole, the VA, the mess hall...think tanks...
We lose everything. Fast. Of course we do. You need that money.
What first caught my eye of course was the tax paying whine comment. I guess if you have never paid them - moving money from one field in your W-2/1099 to another isn't paying taxes AM- you don't understand the "whine". Which is becoming a roar, if you missed it. Those taxes are currently funding high traveling lifestyles, as well as your "station".
Well to paraphrase Jefferson, we've realized were being fitted with a saddle while you privileged few are being booted and spurred to ride. A right you think is yours based on an taxpayer financed Ivy League education instead of conferred by divine mandate. And we don't agree.
I guess they've eliminated the short story " A Man without a Country" from primary education.
If that's really what you think of us, get off our couch. Go support yourselves. Give me back my money that I earned, you can go tour the world on your dime.
We lost interest in the war or the ME great game because it's not our game. Also any war the Dems/Progressives are running is not a war. It's a govt program, and will never end.....

TJ makes a good point! When the Pentagon team returns after a decade of expensive and strategically dubious football matches, America will be a seething cauldron of hysterical tea party types ranting about taxes, privilege, Al-Shabaab Mexicans, reverse racism, think-tankers drinking Cristal, GS workers driving Ferraris, etc. The Pentagon team may not recognize their beloved homeland which, at the time of their departure, was a seething cauldron of hysterical liberals ranting about the Haliburton, yellow cake, Valerie Plame, neo-colonialism, the intrinsic peacefulness of the Mooslem religion and peoples, etc. The Pentagon team may have trouble adjusting. Fortunately, there is no shortage of oversees soccer gigs to keep them busy!
I'd write more, but I have to go see my tax man about shifting the proceeds from my trust fund into offshore accounts, and then I'm off to a secret orgy at Harvard Collage of Yale University State. Tah tah!

"Above all, the best and the brightest believed in their own infallibility. They distrusted politics almost as much as they distrusted the proletariat because politics was about compromise and satisfying ninnies (us) who they felt were much beneath them. They were cold, logical, bloodless, and deeply pragmatic. They considered liberal idealists fools, and emotion a weakness. They knew best, which made them extremely intimidating. They failed because they didn’t think they could possibly be wrong."
"Like The Best and the Brightest 1.0, these folks — guys like Larry Summers, outgoing budget director Peter Orszag, and Tim Geithner, on the economic side; and William J. Lynn 3d, deputy secretary of defense, and James Steinberg, deputy secretary of state, on the foreign side — are Ivy-educated, confident, and implacable realists and rationalists. Like their forebears, they have all the answers, which is why they have been so unaccommodating of other suggestions on the economy, where economists have been pressing them for more stimulus, or on Afghanistan, where the president keeps doubling down his bets."

*During the first ten
*During the first ten minutes, I suspect the Pentagon will play its newly patented 4-2-5 formation, in accordance with its belief that the Revolution in Midfielder Affairs has rendered the goalkeeper position obsolete while allowing more players than ever before to play up top. The back line will be manned almost exclusively by retired national team players and third-world nationals on short term contracts; although these defenders generally do a good job they occasionally attack random spectators in the crowd for making threatening moves towards the goal. As things begin to look bleak in the second half, many pundits will comment upon the futility of imposing an American strategy upon a Middle Eastern game ball whose composition has frustrated many excellent European squads over the years. Only by retaining the services of the men who wrote "Learning to Play Total Football With a Knife" and "The Accidental Dutchman" will the American coaching staff embrace the 4-3-3 and the beautiful game.*
[Semi-serious side note: Are there meaningful parallels between the progression of Total Football and Counterinsurgency? Both had modern roots stretching back decades but were generally ignored by "big-time" programs until they were resurrected and refined by some charismatic boosters. Both emphasized the need for participants to be cross-trained to the point where they could instantly shift tasks and rotate positions with their teammates. Both generated a lot of excitement and offered a more aesthetically pleasing way of playing the game. Might counterinsurgency be headed for the same fate as Total Football, though, a system that many decided was ultimately unsustainable although certain elements (i.e. the free-ranging fullbacks) were retained?]

In fairness to Frum, I believe he employed the word 'axis' in the text, and that Gerson added 'evil'.
