It will surprise very few people to know that Battleship and Risk sit on the communal tables outside our offices here at CNAS. Ganesh Sitaraman, hand pictured, pointed out to everyone this afternoon the way in which, as in real life, Afghanistan is a nightmare: unlike relatively secure areas like the Americas and Australia, Afghanistan's porous borders mean occupying players are subject to attack from FIVE sides. Occupying armies should consider themselves forewarned: Invading is easy; staying is hard.

Anybody else find that a
Anybody else find that a freakishly long finger?
Has Ganesh considered taking
Has Ganesh considered taking up the piano or guitar? That's a serious pointer your colleague has got there.
Also, Australia, then Australia+Asia, was always the easy win if you were lucky enough to start with the right regional territory. Europe isn't worth spending time on. The Americas are a game winner if you start with a LOT of territory, cause combined they have less borders than afghanistan, but for 7 armies a turn... but game theory pretty much preserves an equilibrium in that area in 3-or-more player games of intelligent people.
so why stay?
so why stay?
I don't think the Middle
I don't think the Middle East is quite as bad as trying to defend Ukraine. The Ukraine in Risk is a veritable kill-zone unless you can form a frontier with one of the neighboring territories (and even then, Europe is one of the hardest continents to take and hold in Risk).
By the way, does anyone else
By the way, does anyone else think that South America in Risk is basically a graveyard for players? Every time I've gotten stuck down there with it as my sole continent, I've lost. It may be easy to hold, but it's also easy to defend against, and you don't get squat per turn in terms of armies.
Risk is fine, but I guess in
Risk is fine, but I guess in the back of my mind I'd always hoped that CNAS would be more keen on 'Diplomacy' than 'Risk'. Mind you, after a long and bitter Diplomacy session, there may not be any CNAS left!

You should consider playing
You should consider playing the new Medal of Honor: Afghanistan game instead. I hear there's a great red-cell multi-player option.
Is there a game of Twister
Is there a game of Twister set up at CNAS as well?
Oh shoot it is the perfect
Oh shoot it is the perfect game-metaphor for CNAS and its mix of ex junior military officers, senior officers, retired officers and of course experts since it very cleverly combines tactics with strategy: Battleship being the game of tactics and Risk of strategy. Which one is played more in the halls of CNAS I wonder?
I like Abu Fox's question about "twister" though.
Actually this post by Andrew had the ring and reminded me of the zenism of FM 3-24's Paradox section. That is to say the proposition of contradictions which literally in themselves say nothing beyond the obvious but for some reason have come to be the leitmotif of the new way of war.
Andrew said, "Occupying armies should consider themselves forewarned: Invading is easy; staying is hard."
Or, as FM 3-23 states "sometimes the more you protect yourself the less secure you are."
Or as Bruce Lee said in “Enter the Dragon” “It is the art of fighting without fighting.”
Just playn’ chief, don’t get your hackles up.

I would have thought that
I would have thought that the board-game of choice for Coindinistas is JUNTA ...
There's chess, too. Nagl
There's chess, too. Nagl whupped me once while I was an intern there.
Here are some new age
Here are some new age questions for board members and share holders of the multinational corporations in our b*tched up offshored US economy.
1) You off-shored my US job, why should I purchase your product made in China?
2) You just gave my job to an person in India, why should I fight a war in a neighboring country to stablize the region?
3) You just told me that you are expanding markets outside the US, why should I join the US Army to get crippled in order to stablize your emerging market. Go hire a contractor for $1000/day, you like to sub-contract or grab a gun and stablized your own market place.
4) Why should I care if some guy on Wall Street who is betting on USA's economy failing gets blown to shreads by some guy from the foreign country the Wall Street guy put his money into to avoid paying US taxes?
5) Why should I design your war toy so you can be Daddy War Bucks. Get someone in China to do it and move there while your at it.
6) You're a multinational, what flag do you raise in the morning in front of the home office? How about the foreign office?
It is always about the tuff choices in business.
Lets make a board game........."Become richer than your wildest dream" . Be a CEO and draw a card to answer the tuff question.
Pffft, Ex--I see your
Pffft, Ex--I see your regular-RISK-with-Afghanistan, and raise you one purpose-made Iraq RISK (complete with the famed "Ahmed Chalibi" card that allows you to steal resources from your neighbours): http://social.consimworld.com/photo/iraq-risk/prev
So what I hear you saying is
So what I hear you saying is that we should have invaded Australia first?

Fair point, so what then is the board game of choice for the Cointras?
I miss SNLII

Gian:
Well, if SNLII were to design that game, it would somehow involve insurgents and goats.
I do know what the video clip for COINtras would be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXCUBVS4kfQ (watch it through to the end to capture the problems of hearts-and-minds COIN doctrine in a high intensity conflict).

Risk? Battleship? It's time
Risk? Battleship? It's time for CNAS to place an immediate order for Twilight Struggle: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-284-twilight-struggle-deluxe-edition.aspx. This game makes you sweat out the entire Cold War and has more drama than a Rolling Stone article on an American General.
And I'd love to see thoughts on Labyrinth: The War on Terror when that comes out: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-294-labyrinth.aspx
Labyrinth might be a bit
Labyrinth might be a bit complicated for gaming newbies, but it's a very impressive game.
I'm a bit behind on COIN gaming reviews--there's a stack on my bookshelf awaiting a write-up--but you'll find reviews of Liberia, Battle for Baghdad, Ici, c'est la France, and Algeria at http://paxsims.wordpress.com.

"Fair point, so what then is the board game of choice for the Cointras?"
Hmm, don't know about board-games. But I guess w.r.t computer games, a Coindinista might consider Paraworld the game of choice for Cointras:
http://games.softpedia.com/get/Cheat-Solutions/Paraworld-Complete-Savega...
"Brave warriors command huge armed dinosaurs and other dangerous beasts in a wonderful primeval world full of danger. ParaWorld is a realtime strategy game that brings the player into a wild archaic world with gigantic dinosaurs. ... it is ruled by warlike tribes and huge dinosaurs. ... Armed with devastating weapons and covered in fearsome war paint you will go to battle - leading your people into a fight to save the ParaWorld.."
On the other hand, there is a Coin element even in Paraworld:
"The player plays ParaWorld by controlling his tribes and training them to fight and build. The three tribes distinguish themselves not only by their technology progress but also by their different behaviour with the fighting units depending on the way of play."
Well, I tried ... ;-)
P.S.. No, I never played it ...
Maybe Castle Risk with its
Maybe Castle Risk with its emphasis on empires would be more suitable for CNAS game night.

@Gian, Perhaps the board game for COINtras is simply called reality.
