For what it's worth...
...I don't think this speech by the president matters much. But I thought it was excellent. I thought it showed class regarding President Bush, made the right connections between the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and said the right things concerning the nature and composition of U.S. power.
On a related note, I can understand why Republicans do not like this president concerning his preferred domestic policy. But honestly, I can't see how they have much to complain about concerning national security policies.
And on an unrelated but completely apolitical note, let me take this opportunity to remember my friend Joel Cahill. RIP. RLTW. Sua Sponte.

The spirit of magnanimity displayed by President Obama toward former President Bush might have been appropriate, had Barack Obama been the object of Bush's offenses.
Obama paid tribute to Bush's conception of Bush's motives, implicitly rejecting as Bush does any suggestion that senior officials ever accept responsibility for their actions. He flattered Bush, flattered the Iraqis, and offered to Americans' concern about the economy (and for that matter Afghanistan) nothing but boilerplate rhetoric he has used many times before.
It was an utterly hapless performance.

Republican here. The only objection I have is the President giving a date certain for withdraw. I think that is a strategic mistake. The fact that the President didn't say anything about it tonight is also a mistake, but I understand why he did it (read: appeasing the Liberal base of his party). Mentioning President Bush was a classy move.
The main objection that Republicans have on the President's foreign policy is with Iran, but to be fair their are no good options for Iran.

Oddly, even disturbingly, most of us—our memories short, our innocence intact—seem content with the outcome. The United States leaves Iraq having learned nothing.

I wouldn't respect the gesture even if I thought it would be effective politically -- there is approximately 100% likelihood it will not be -- because America is not any longer in a position where a President can screw up as comprehensively as the last one did without serious and long-lasting consequences. Obama, as President, owes the country an honest accounting of the nation's position. His eye fixed on his own position, as a campaign professional's might be expected to be, he didn't give such an accounting this evening.
