3 Hours

That's how long it took U.S. Marines to recover a downed aviator in Libya. Or, as one of my co-workers put it, "I've been stuck on Metro for longer than that."

Good job except for shooting

Good job except for shooting six Libyan civilians including a kid.

There are no boots on the

There are no boots on the ground in Libya.

Perhaps Metro should hire

Perhaps Metro should hire more Marines.

Its also kind of funny that a buddy of mine left the Marine Corps Recon community to become an Air Force PJ. Now Recon is doing PJ missions in Libya. Of course, the joke in Recon battalion is that the first school all Air Force PJs go to is Marine Corps Boot Camp.

1. Hot LZ. 2. People

1. Hot LZ.
2. People running around waving AKs in the air.
3. Marines.

and we're somehow shocked that people got shot?

about what led to the 2 x

about what led to the 2 x GBU-12s being dropped.

Incredibly impressive

Incredibly impressive response time, Almost as quick as IRT in theatre! Would be interested to find what the CAS was used on?

They dropped the bomb between

They dropped the bomb between our guys and a crowd running towards them with AKs. They didn't shoot anyone that I've heard. However if you want a civilian/childproof battlefield - then don't have wars.

Talk about elective wars. This was a Spring Break War. C-YA - I'm off on another vacation. Gotta go give Brazil 2 Billion taxpayer dollars to sell us oil I won't let us drill for...

Done that handover to France/NATO/Arab League/UK anyone Bueller yet?

Glad to hear that the crew

Glad to hear that the crew was recovered safely!

I'm not up on all the military lingo...(so I don't know what ISO means)...but wouldn't they use the GBU-12's on the plane to "make sure"?

Sad to hear that there were civvie casualties (if it's true).

Anyone here what caused the F-15 to go down?

Anyone know what the french

Anyone know what the french used as tankbusters? Big debate over at Exiled.

I am highly impressed by the

I am highly impressed by the fantastic response time of the tactical unit involved.

I am somewhat less impressed that it took JFACC nearly an hour and a half — half of the total response time — to approve the mission.

Am I the only one who isn't

Am I the only one who isn't impressed by the response time? Let's review:

Time (T) from F-15E down to:
- AV-8B wheels-up: T+1 hour 17 min
- JFACC approval: T+1 hour 22 min

Seems pretty sluggish so far, assuming that the TRAP drill is a pre-planned, pre-coordinated, pre-rehearsed contingency. If not, should have been.

Re-starting the clock after the HQ thumbs-up:
- KC-130J wheels-up: T+25 min (total T+1:47)
- QRF at REDCON 1: T+35 min (1:57)
- MV-22s wheels-up: T+38 min (TWO HOURS)

Even conceding the entire approval process up the chain and back down, how is it that the TRAP package/QRF wasn't wheels-up at JFACC approval +1 min? I mean, shouldn't the whole thing have been at a heightened state of alert to begin with? How long does it / should it take for 6 aircrews and one scout platoon to get to the flight deck, crank up, and move out?

It's only a hot LZ if you're

It's only a hot LZ if you're being shot at. If not it's just a typical lack of concern for the locals, a tendency to panic and desire to get kills that has lead to much of the problems in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Interesting that the TRAP was

Interesting that the TRAP was conducted by the Recon Plt. Although there are variations, the TRAP mission is usually given to the BLT's 81s platoon. I may be going out on a limb here, but the choice of unit for the TRAP says a lot about how much we lean towards using our SOF (or equivalent) assets instead of the regular grunts who have successfully conducted these missions in the past (e.g. Scott O'Grady in the late 90's).

Or am I reading too much into this?

As a former member of this

As a former member of this particular MEU, I take considerable pride in the operation. While true that the head shed took a substantial amount of time approving the mission to recover the pilot, the ability and professionalism of the guys who swooped him up does quite a bit to make up for the delay. Proud of ya'll. Keep it up.

And pilots? Try to avoid getting shot down again? Please?

Harriers should have been on

Harriers should have been on Alert 15 or 30 worst case and Ospreys w/TRAP force Alert 30 unless the MEU wasn't the primary recovery force. Had to have been some other reason for it to take this long for them to get off the deck. Keep in mind, they probably don't launch until they have the survivors' location.

So how was the WSO recovered

So how was the WSO recovered again? Pro-rebel villagers returned him to the U.S. military. But there are not suppose to be any ground forces? Hmm...

How much did the United

How much did the United States have to give up to get the collation happy and on the team ?"

Coalition of the bribed indeed. And it isn't over yet. Now that everyone in NATO has a veto on the operation everyone's going to be holding out for bigger pieces of the pie.

Desperate as they were,

Desperate as they were, they're going to come to regret ever passing this off onto NATO.

Guess the timing on the

Guess the timing on the nuclear discussion in Chile was bad.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFeYcQgi5_s

Does Chile sit on a fault line? Oops.

Training Nuclear Engineers in Chile ?????. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUGcaQcUEhM

The US is paying $2 Million a year to Libya to keep their nuclear engineers employed !!!!!!! Those guys were from the days that Libya was going nuclear and the US did not want the knowledge to go to the highest bidder. US put the people on the US payroll.

20% unemployed/underemployed in the US....go figure. Clinton told the Tunisians she would give them jobs, right after she handed out $25M in foreign aid, and they asked for more. Day before that it was $90M in Egypt. Now we are a Billion in the hole on Cruise Missiles....Crap.

Obama's new spending program that he was talking about after mid-terms is on a roll! Stealth Stimulus.

Visitor @12:38am Think you

Visitor @12:38am

Think you are seeing the future. I figure it will start with one of the Arab Leaders not liking the deal. French are a little moody too. All depends on how long it takes to get Gadhafi out to the picture.

It is a little odd, we got a US service man up on murder charges and NATO is gunning for Gadhafi.

Shit this is twisted.

The pictures I have seen

The pictures I have seen indicate the F-15 "belly flopped" in and burned, but the intact tail section leads me to believe no "post crash" weapons were used.

The more I look at the Nato

The more I look at the Nato transistion, the more I realize that nothing really happened.

Hillary got in a four way conversation and the only thing she got was enough to say that NATO took command of the NFZ so she and Obama could look good. What does that really mean? Nothing. The people involved move just enough to let Clinton and Obama put a shade of truth into saying that NATO has a little more responsibility.

US still is doing and paying for everything it did up to the phone call including a command center. There was just a NATO overlay placed on the US operation with twin bureaucracy.

Well, yeah, from a military perspective it provides nothing. In fact, it is counterproductive. You've now got more or less the same assets (noones going to start contributing anymore than they already planned), except as you've said, overlayed with entirely new bureacratic and political obstacles. Whereas previous, hesitant/hostile countries like Germany or Turkey either could avoid getting directly involved, they're now tied in. Consequently they not only have to take a stand, but also are able, due to NATO's unique consensus decision-making, to apply an effective veto over the operation.

Such is what happens when the you chase the magic legitimacy fairies.

Can you imagine what would

Can you imagine what would have or would happen if we got into a real shooting war with these wankers as allies? The Russians must be kicking themselves. Hopefully they are not too tempted now...

NATO would have failed

NATO would have failed spectacularly. From the beginning it's been a political organization masquerading as a military organization.
