I'll return on Friday. Posting will be light-to-nonexistant until then. Intern Dana is working on an interesting post looking at the events in the Arabic-speaking world through the lens of Malcom Kerr's The Arab Cold War: Gamal 'Abd al-Nasir and His Rivals, 1958-1970, which has the potential to be really interesting.

Happy Travels Andrew.
I am a little concerned about these people's travels.

It is not reposible to send people into this....
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant Reactor 3 contains mixed fuel, including Plutonium. The outer containment building blew off of Reactor 3 a couple days ago due to a hydrogen explosion. The spent fuel pool, which is not inside Reactor 3's inner containment shell, has been over heating. Press reports have indicated that there may have been a fire in the spent fuel pool of Reactor 3 similar to what happened to Reactor 4 yesterday. Potassium Iodine is given to balance the effects of Radioactive Iodine that has been released from Reactors 1, 2, 3, and 4. There is no cure for inhaling or ingesting Plutonium being put off by Reactor 3. There is no pill for Cesium 137, a fission by product also released by Reactors 1, 2, 3, and 4. Once a radio active material is inhaled or ingested, the absorbed dose to the human body increases until the body can expel the substance, Plutonium is the worst because it stays in the body.
Some of the Reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have melted cores. At least one of the Reactor's inner containment shells has failed. Spent fuel in all the Reactor's pools are in question. If radiation level increase, Japan with either have to accept volunteers or walk away from the Reactors and let them go their course. At a minimum, the Japanese have already lost complete control over some of the reactors.
How long will it take to get our military out of harms way? Which way are the winds going to blow? New ships are arriving in the area based on previous day's orders from Fearless Leader. All the ships are down wind of the reactors and wind shifts faster than ships can respond.
I hope someone in Washington knows what Obama, the commander and chief, is asking of our military.
US taxpayer is on the hook for Vietanam Agent Orange, First Gulf War Veterans, and now Current War Vets.
Why ask for more?
Obama did it, not GW Bush.

"We train and equip all of our people to operate in all kinds of environments. So we know how to measure (radiation), we know how to test. We know how to respond. We know how to take precautions," he said.
Think I have heard that before. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.
