Introducing, Carlos

It is with great pride that Charlie introduces the newest addition to the world-famous blogging team here at Abu Muqawama: gang, meet Carlos.

In contrast to the insurgency "experts" already writing here, Carlos is more explicitly a (counter) terrorism kind of guy. (Hence the name. I know. Try and keep up.) He is also an expert on all things Southeast Asian, a region that we've woefully neglected. He's worked extensively with government and military officials throughout the region. And Carlos knows more than most federal agencies would be comfortable with about groups like JI, Aum Shumrikyo, and of course, MILF. (No discussion of SE Asian terror groups is complete without mentioning the MILF. The things you learn teaching Marines....)

Welcome aboard, Carlos!

Introducing Abu M's 6th Man

In keeping with our finest traditions of wicked smaht COIN analysis and ridiculously absurd pseudonyms, Charlie is thrilled to introduce the newest addition to the Abu M blogging team--Troy. Having played a man down for several weeks now, we're thrilled to have him come in off the bench.

Troy traded life inside the beltway for the City of Dreaming Spires, where his research focuses on military strategy and irregular warfare. As a utility player he has an eclectic remit which among other things includes insurgencies in South and Southeast Asia as well as picking up the "British beat" from Abu Muqawama. But unlike AM, Troy roots for Spurs.

Our trans-Atlantic dominance knows no bounds!

Layout Tinkering, v2.0

Round 2.

Working on the "read more" cuts. Will hopefully figure out how to get them off the old posts soon. Stand by.

Update: Sucks to the "read more." We're gonna go with this look for a while. Thanks for all the input. Now back to the analysis and mockery.

Layout tinkering

Astute readers will realize that we've changed both the layout and color scheme of the blog. One goal here was to maximize (the horizontal) posting space, which allows for more posts to be viewed as one scrolls down.

Let us know how that's working for you...you shouldn't notice any content or navigational differences.

UPDATE: Kip, here, what Charlie really means is, "Don't complain now about the new puke-green color or next week it will be high heels on AM with a pink boa." Coming up next with our new fashion sense, Cosmo recipes and a movie review of Sex and the City. Harrumph: Kip, out.

We Are Abu Muqawama

Updated 23 June 2008.
Dear Readers, following the departure of this fine blog's namesake (better known as Andrew Exum), small-forward Charlie (aka Erin Simpson) assumed a player-manager role.

Her first task was the successful recruitment of Troy, Abu M's 6th Man. Continuing our trans-Atlantic dominance, he picks up AM's coverage of British military and COIN developments while also drawing our attention to insurgencies in South and Southeast Asia.

Stay tuned for additional draft and trade news.

Dear Readers,

As some of you may have noticed, we have expanded the blogging team in recent weeks. To give you a better idea who we are and what we'll be covering, allow Abu Muqawama himself to introduce the starting five:

At power forward, Dr. iRack is a Washington-based analyst and counter-insurgency specialist who will be covering Iraq (obviously) but also COIN doctrine.

At center, Kip is an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran who focuses on Afghanistan, advising and technology. We're not telling which army -- or even which side -- Kip fought with.

At small forward, Charlie is a civilian who teaches Marines how to fight. She focuses on the inter-agency process, COIN doctrine, and all things Marine Corps. (Also, the Red Sox and Kansas University basketball.)

At shooting guard, Londonstani is a violent Pashtun (is that redundant?) from an unfashionable area of London who speaks about eight languages and focuses on the radicalization process taking place in the suburbs of Europe. He also covers al-Qaeda and corrects Abu Muqawama's Arabic. He has shared flats with Abu Muqawama on two continents now.

And running the point, Abu Muqawama handles most of the day-to-day operations of the blog and posts on everything from COIN doctrine to Hizbollah. He's from Tennessee and takes great pride in both his home state and his Scots ancestry. He has no known hobbies aside from going to church, skyping with Lady Muqawama, and watching Manchester United. Like Kip, he fought in a few wars but -- unlike Kip -- was smart enough to quit when they started getting difficult.
