“As we [Afghanistan and The United States of America] pursue our shared strategy to defeat al Qaeda, I’m pleased that our two countries are working to broaden our strategic partnership over the long term. Even as we begin to transition security responsibility to Afghans over the next year, we will sustain a robust commitment in Afghanistan going forward. . . across a full range of areas—including development and agriculture”

President Barack Obama, Remarks by President Obama and President Karzai of Afghanistan in Joint Press Availability, Monday, May 12, 2010.

Natural Security News: Update

  • One more news item from today, just flagged by a DOD contact: UPI reports that the CIA is opening a Center on Climate Change and National Security. This is big news, especially given that the CIA's own press release states that it will "be aggressive in outreach to academics and think tanks working the issue." Good work, Agency!

That's great! It's really about time government agencies took serious steps in this direction. And who is better suited to serve as the Agency's academic partner than CNAS?

DM: Thanks! This is an exciting step, and of course we're always glad if what we do can be helpful. It will be interesting to see the size of this new unit.

An important thing to note in this. Tomorrow (October 6), the Senate is scheduled to vote on blocking funding for the CIA’s center. This is an important vote that could undermine the Intelligence Community’s ability to forsee the impacts of climate change. As I understand it, this has snuck under the radar so far. Its a clear challenge to the concept of 'climate security'.

I've got a full write-up here: http://climatesecurity.blogspot.com/2009/10/senate-to-vote-to-strip-fund...
