The United States is worried about the maritime standoff between Japan and China over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, a U.S. envoy to Japan said Tuesday, calling for a "clear and reliable" crisis management system to avoid an unwanted clash.

"We obviously remain very concerned about the situation surrounding the Senkaku Islands but also the serious downturn in Japan-China relations in general," said Kurt Tong, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

"At a minimum, we'd like to see the two sides, as I said, set up clear and reliable crisis management mechanisms," Tong told a symposium in Tokyo.
