The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted an evening event on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, to celebrate its Fifth Anniversary and to commemorate five years of promoting strong, pragmatic and principled national security and defense policies. The evening celebration featured a remarkable lineup of speakers, including a keynote address by General Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

CNAS also honored Dr. William Perry, former Secretary of Defense, for his extraordinary career as a public servant, strategist, business leader and scholar as well as for his role as the founding Chairman of the CNAS Board of Directors.     The Honorable Richard L. Armitage
    President, Armitage International

    Beginning March 2005, Richard L. Armitage became President of Armitage International. Previously, his nomination as Deputy Secretary of State was confirmed by the Senate on March 23, 2001. He was sworn in on March 26, 2001.

    Prior to returning to government service in 2001, Mr. Armitage was President of Armitage Associates L.C. from May 1993 until March 2001. He had been engaged in a range of worldwide business and public policy endeavors as well as frequent public speaking and writing.

    Non-Resident Senior Fellow

    Dr. John Nagl is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security and the Minerva Research Fellow at the U.S. Naval Academy as part of the Department of Defense Minerva Initiative program.  He was previously the President of CNAS. He is also a member of the Defense Policy Board, a Visiting Professor in the War Studies Department at Kings College of London, a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies.  Dr.

    The Honorable Dr. William J. Perry
    Professor and Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace, Stanford University

    William J. Perry, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, is the Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor at Stanford University, with a joint appointment in the School of Engineering and the Institute for International Studies, where he is codirector of the Preventive Defense Project, a research collaboration of Stanford and Harvard Universities. Perry was the nineteenth United States secretary of defense, serving from February 1994 to January 1997.
