India Initiative

The economic, political, and military rise of India is reshaping world politics and promises to make India both a true global power and one of the most important bilateral partners for the United States. Unfortunately, this reality has neither translated into sophisticated strategic engagement by Washington nor a clear articulation of long-term American interests. This project - co-chaired by CNAS Board of Directors members Richard Armitage, former Deputy Secretary of State, and Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs - laid out a blueprint for the next phase of the U.S.-India relationship. The goal of the CNAS U.S.-India Initiative is to help advance growing bilateral ties in areas of mutual interest, including security, economics, energy and climate change, democracy and human rights.

    The Honorable Richard L. Armitage
    President, Armitage International

    Beginning March 2005, Richard L. Armitage became President of Armitage International. Previously, his nomination as Deputy Secretary of State was confirmed by the Senate on March 23, 2001. He was sworn in on March 26, 2001.

    Prior to returning to government service in 2001, Mr. Armitage was President of Armitage Associates L.C. from May 1993 until March 2001. He had been engaged in a range of worldwide business and public policy endeavors as well as frequent public speaking and writing.

    Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

    Nicholas Burns is Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School.  He is Director of the Future of Diplomacy Project and Faculty Chair for the Programs on the Middle East and on India and South Asia.   He also serves on the Board of Directors of the School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He was a visiting Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in summer 2008.

    Senior Advisor and Senior Fellow

    Richard Fontaine is a Senior Advisor and Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).  He previously served as foreign policy advisor to Senator John McCain for more than five years.  He has also worked at the State Department, the National Security Council and on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

    Robert Kaplan
    Senior Fellow

    Robert D. Kaplan has been a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security since March 2008, and has been a foreign correspondent for The Atlantic for over a quarter-century. He is the author of Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power, published by Random House in October, 2010, with the paperback to be released in September.
