The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted its fourth annual conference, Shaping the Agenda: American Security in the 21st Century, on June 10, 2010.  The event featured a keynote address by Michèle Flournoy, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and three expert panels discussing the most salient national security challenges America faces.  Shaping the Agenda also marked the release of 9 new CNAS publications on topics including Afghanistan, the role of contractors in conflicts, the limits of U.S. diplomatic and military engagement, the future role of U.S. Special Operations Forces, the U.S.-Indonesian strategic partnership, and Natural Security (the national security implications of climate change, energy, and natural resource consumption).

    Anne-Marie Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009–2011 she served as Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State, the first woman to hold that position. Upon leaving the State Department she received the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor conferred by the State Department, for her work leading the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review.
