The Center for a New American Security's (CNAS) fifth annual conference, "Risk and Reward: American Security in an Age of Uncertainty," took place in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, June 2, 2011.

The CNAS fifth annual conference featured timely discussions with senior national security experts on Afghanistan, Pakistan and Al Qaeda; revolution in the Middle East; cyberwar and cybersecurity; and cooperation and competition in China and the Asia Pacific. The conference also marked the release of five new CNAS publications: America’s Cyber Future: Security and Prosperity in the Information Age; Beyond Afghanistan: A Regional Security Strategy for South and Central Asia; Internet Freedom: A Foreign Policy Imperative in the Digital Age; Elements of Security: Mitigating the Risks of U.S. Dependence on Critical Minerals; and Upheaval: U.S. Policy Toward Iran in a Changing Middle East.

Lieutenant General David W. Barno, USA (Ret.)
Senior Advisor and Senior FellowGeneral Barno, a highly decorated military officer with over 30 years of service, has served in a variety of command and staff positions in the United States and around the world, to include command at every level. He served many of his early years in special operations forces with Army Ranger battalions, to include combat in both the Grenada and Panama invasions. In 2003, he was selected to establish a new three-star operational headquarters in Afghanistan and take command of the 20,000 U.S. and Coalition Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom. For 19 months in this position, he was responsible for the overall military leadership of this complex political-military mission, devising a highly innovative counterinsurgency strategy in close partnership with the U.S. embassy and coalition allies.

Dr. Patrick M. Cronin
Senior Advisor and Senior Director of the Asia-Pacific Security ProgramPatrick M. Cronin is a Senior Advisor and Senior Director of the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). Previously, he was the Director of the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) at National Defense University and has a nearly 30-year career inside government and academic research centers, spanning defense affairs, foreign policy, and development assistance.

Richard Fontaine
PresidentRichard Fontaine is the President of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). He served as a Senior Advisor and Senior Fellow at CNAS from 2009-2012. He previously served as foreign policy advisor to Senator John McCain for more than five years. He has also worked at the State Department, the National Security Council and on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Karen Elliott House
Karen Elliott House retired in March 2006 as senior vice president of Dow Jones & Company and publisher of all print editions of The Wall Street Journal. She was also a member of the company's executive committee.
She was a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard in 2007-08 and is currently researching a book on Saudi Arabia.

Kaplan has been a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security since March 2008, and has been a foreign correspondent for The Atlantic for over a quarter-century.
