Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Miller is the Senior Commandant of the Marine Corps Fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Lieutenant Colonel Miller was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1994 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Science. Prior to attending The Basic School, Lieutenant Colonel Miller attended the U.S. Army’s Basic AIRBORNE School in Fort Benning, Georgia. Lieutenant Colonel Miller graduated The Basic School and the Infantry Officer’s Course in 1995. 

He served as the 3d Platoon Commander and Executive Officer for Company D, 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division from 1995 to 1998. He attended the Light Armored Vehicle Leader’s Course, the Summer Mountain Warfare Training Package, the Tactical Air Control Party School, and the U.S. Army’s Calvary Leader’s Course. Lieutenant Colonel Miller completed two deployments to Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division, in Okinawa, Japan, during this assignment.

Upon promotion to Captain in 1998, he was assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego where he served as a Series Commander for Company C, and Commanding Officer for Company B, 1st Recruit Training Battalion. In 2000, he was selected to be the Assistant Operations Officer for the Western Recruiting Region. While at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Lieutenant Colonel Miller completed the Amphibious Warfare School Non-Resident program.

In 2000, Lieutenant Colonel Miller was transferred to be the Commanding Officer of Company D, 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. During his almost three-year tenure as their commander, he completed another deployment to Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division, in Okinawa, Japan and independently deployed his company to Kuwait and commanded his unit during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM I & II. Additionally, Lieutenant Colonel Miller completed the Marine Corps Command and Staff Non-Resident program. 

In 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Miller was frocked to the rank of Major and was transferred to the North American Aerospace Defense Command & US Northern Command for a joint assignment. He served as a planner in the Bi-National Planning Group as part of a NORAD & USNORTHCOM planning effort in support of crisis response and consequence management operations. He also served as an Assistant Watch Chief for the USNORTHCOM Joint Operations Center where he helped direct and manage the military response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Lieutenant Colonel Miller completed his joint assignment upon graduation of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School and was certified as a Joint Specialty Officer.

In 2006, Lieutenant Colonel Miller was transferred to 1st Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment, 2d Marine Division to serve as the Operations Officer and Executive Officer, where he completed two more combat deployments to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 06-08.2 and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 08.2.

In 2009, Lieutenant Colonel Miller served as a planner for the Manpower Plans and Policy Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs for Headquarters Marine Corps. There, he served as the lead Marine manpower planner for the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review and worked on numerous DOTMLPF changes for the Marine Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Miller was promoted to his current rank in 2010 and selected to command 2d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment of the 2d Marine Division.

In 2010, Lieutenant Colonel Miller commanded 2d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment and formed the unit into the 1,200 man strong Battalion Landing Team 2/2 as the Ground Combat Element of the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit. The unit deployed in March of 2011 in support of NATO Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR for operations in Libya and completed the deployment in February of 2012.

In 2012, Lieutenant Colonel Miller attended the US Army War College and graduated with a Masters Degree in Military Studies. In 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Miller was selected and assigned to be a Commandant of the Marine Corps Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington, DC think tank.

Lieutenant Colonel Miller’s decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with one Gold Star, the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing “V” device and one Gold Star, the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation.

Lieutenant Colonel Miller is married to the former Heather Paige B Boykin of Gulf Breeze, Florida. They have one son, Ryan.
