Lieutenant Colonel Goodes was commissioned in 1989.   Following TBS he served as a Platoon Commander for the United States Naval Academy's PROTRAMID program.  He graduated the Basic Communications Officers Course in December 1990, and was assigned to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC.

While with MWCS 28, he served as Detachment Alpha’s Wire Platoon Commander and Single Channel Radio Platoon Commander, and as the Squadron’s S-3 Training Officer.   

In 1993, First Lieutenant Goodes transferred to MWCS 48, Naval Air Station Glenview, IL, and served as Detachment Alpha’s Operations Officer, the Squadron’s S-3A, the Squadron’s Executive Officer, and as Marine Air Control Group 48’s Communications and Electronics Officer.  He graduated the Weapons and Tactics Instructor’s Course 1-95.

In June 1996, Captain Goodes transferred to MCCDC for duty as a student at the Command and Control Systems Course.  Designated an Honor Graduate, he remained aboard Quantico and served as a Platoon Commander with the Officers Candidate School before executing orders to III Marine Expeditionary Forces, Okinawa, Japan. 

During November 1997, Captain Goodes was assigned to Joint Task Force Full Accounting, Camp Smith, HI, as the Communications and Electronics Officer.  Upon his return to Okinawa in May 1998, he served as a III Marine Expeditionary Forces’ G-6 Plans Officer.  In January 1999, he transferred to 7th Communication Battalion and served as the Support Company’s Commanding Officer; in June 2000 he became the Battalion’s Executive Officer. 

In 2001, Major Goodes was assigned to the Command and Control Systems Course as a Command and Control Systems and Information Management (C2/IM) instructor.  While a faculty member, he represented the Marine Corps in the US Air Force’s 2001 Title X Wargame and he deployed to the Republic of Georgia as a member of the USEUCOM’s Joint Contact Team Program responsible for presenting Marine Corps command and control tactics, techniques, and procedures to officers of the Georgian Ministry of Defense. 

From 2002 through 2004, Major Goodes served as the Marine Corps University’s Expeditionary Warfare School’s C2/IM instructor, as well as, a faculty advisor for over thirty Joint and coalition officers. In 2004, he reported to USJFCOM and was assigned to the J681 directorate to work Time Sensitive Targeting issues.  During March 2005 Major Goodes was selected to be the Executive Assistant for the Chief of Staff USJFCOM.  Following a year of duty as the EA, he transferred to the Joint Center for Operational Analysis Directorate and worked projects relating to Joint C2, the Global War on Terror, and the Levant.

Before joining the Center for a New American Security in August 2009, Lieutenant Colonel Goodes served as the Commanding Officer of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 from 1 November 2007 to 30 April 2009. 
Lieutenant Colonel Goodes’ personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star, and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Adrian College and a Master of Arts in Military Studies with Honors in Land Warfare, US Specialty, from the American Military University.  He is married to the former Jeanne Zacchea from Sayville, NY.  They have three children: Don, Elizabeth, and Andrea.
