CNAS Co-Founder Michèle Flournoy Joins Board of Directors

Michele Flournoy

Washington, May 16, 2012 — The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is pleased to announce that Michèle Flournoy, former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, has joined its Board of Directors.

Ms. Flournoy served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from February 2009 to February 2012, where she was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense in the formulation of national security and defense policy, oversight of military plans and operations and in National Security Council deliberations. She played a lead role in the development of the Department of Defense's new Strategic Guidance and represented the Department in dozens of foreign engagements, in the media and before Congress. Prior to confirmation, she co-led President Obama's transition team at the Department of Defense.

In January 2007, Ms. Flournoy co-founded CNAS and served as its president until 2009. While at CNAS, Ms. Flournoy published extensively on American grand strategy, U.S. military operations and policy in Iraq and national security challenges for the next administration. Ms. Flournoy co-authored the highly influential 2008 CNAS report Shaping the Iraq Inheritance.

"Michèle started CNAS, and so we're especially pleased to have her back as a Director," said CNAS Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel Fick. "Her knowledge of our mission and culture, coupled now with her recent experience in the Defense Department, make her an invaluable addition to the team."

"CNAS is triply pleased to have Michèle Flournoy join our Board," said Richard Danzig, Chairman of the CNAS Board of Directors. "Michèle is a deeply respected, immensely talented American leader on national security issues. No less significantly, we value her as a colleague and friend. Her qualities of character make her a welcome companion in our efforts to build a strong and collegial institution. Finally, because Michèle was a co-founder of CNAS, it is a pleasure to welcome her home."
