Albert J. Marckwardt is a Major in the United States Army and the co-author of The Defense of Jisr al-Doreaa, a tactical primer on counterinsurgency modeled after the military classic, The Defense of Duffer's Drift. Marckwardt deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Squadron Logistics Officer in 2005 supporting missions throughout Eastern Baghdad. He deployed for a second time as part of the "surge" in 2007, he commanded B Troop, Third Squadron, Seventh U.S. Cavalry where he controlled the densely populated and volatile Adhamiyah region in the heart of Baghdad. He conducted hundreds of Lethal and Non-Lethal mission to include the establishment of the Concerned Local Citizens in the area. His most recent assignment was aide-de-camp to the Commanding General, Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
