Development Officer

Full Time

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) seeks an energetic, proactive, and organized professional to join a growing Development team at a leading bipartisan national security think tank in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of fundraising principles with an emphasis on grants management and development operations. The candidate will possess an aptitude and appreciation for leveraging data, coordinate the grants management process internally, and also liaise externally with funders. The candidate will also conduct prospect research to advance institutional and programmatic fundraising strategies in order to expand the Center’s donor base and yield increased revenue. This position will report to CNAS’ Vice President of Development and work closely with Deputy Director of Development and Development Assistant.


Foundations/Grants Management Portfolio

  • Develop a comprehensive timeline which identifies and tracks opportunities to submit letters of inquiry, concept notes, and proposals to major foundations;
  • Research new foundation initiatives and funding programs which may intersect with program activities;
  • Coordinate with Development, Finance, Studies, Research, and Legal staff in collecting information for all outgoing proposals and submit grant reports (narratives, budgets, organizational documents, and relevant financial documents);
  • Liaise with external funders to fulfill donor and reporting requirements;
  • Contribute to the CNAS proposal development process;
  • Manage and communicate essential data such as grant and pledge period, reporting requirements, invoice due dates and donor primary points of contacts;
  • Record all relevant donor communications related to grants;
  • Manage foreign government funding process and work collaboratively with the Director of Finance for all related requests, including U.S. government funding process as needed.

Individual Portfolio

  • Originate and execute Annual Fund campaign which includes emails and web-based solicitations;
  • Cashier and input data into Salesforce for individual contributions;
  • Draft invoices, donor acknowledgement letters and other correspondence as needed for individual donors, and coordinate with development staff for fulfillment;
  • Assist with supporting CNAS Council activities and solicitations.
  • Manage and execute all aspects of donor conference calls throughout the year;
  • Draft donor-related messages for distribution on a biweekly timeline;
  • Assist and support Development Team with donor events, including conferences, special breakfasts, board meetings, and dinner series.
  • Oversee and maintain Click & Pledge function;
  • Coordinate meetings, travel, and logistics for programs and executives for internal and external meetings as needed;
  • Manage weekly prospect management meetings with the CNAS Executive Team and track work flow;
  • Perform other ad-hoc duties as assigned.

Development Programming and Communications

  • Manage and execute all aspects of donor conference calls throughout the year;
  • Draft donor-related messages for distribution on a biweekly timeline;
  • Assist and support Development Team with donor events, including conferences, special breakfasts, board meetings, and dinner series.

Development Operations

  • Co-lead, with the Development Assistant, management of SalesForce;
  • Update, maintain, and generate SalesForce reports and dashboards on a regular basis;
  • Develop, plan, and execute comprehensive prospect strategies to achieve successful cultivation, engagement, solicitations, and stewardship activities;
  • Actively manage and track prospects in Salesforce in collaboration with the Development Assistant;
  • Work collaboratively with the Development Team to prepare materials for board of directors’ and executive level meetings;
  • Update, manage, and maintain donor data in Salesforce and CampaignMonitor as it relates to development office mailings;

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • A range of three to five years of nonprofit fundraising or business operations experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal and writing skills; detail and process oriented;
  • Ability to understand and interpret budget and financial reports and related information;
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment;
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to handle multiple tasks, shifting priorities, and proprietary information with a high level of discretion;
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications;
  • Salesforce or similar CRM database experience preferred;
  • Interest in national security and foreign policy issues;
  • Ability to remain up to date on CNAS research program agendas;
  • Must possess a professional demeanor in his/her approach and attitude.
