Front-End Web Designer/Developer (Three-month Contracted Position)


The Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a unique, mission driven research institution committed to developing strong, principled and pragmatic national security and defense policy prescriptions for a wide audience of security experts, practitioners, and citizens, seeks a creative, organized, collaborative, and technically adept front-end website designer/developer for a three-month, contracted position to implement design and functionality improvements to the organization’s websites. The successful candidate must be available to work on-site at the CNAS office in Washington D.C. two days per week or available for regular teleconference meetings while working off-site. The designer/developer will focus on enhancing the CNAS website user-experience, developing flexible new webpage templates for the Center’s research projects, and implementing new digital collaboration tools. The candidate must be detail-oriented and capable of laying out and posting complex content, and exploring new and innovative ways to present digital content. The candidate must have at least 3 years of experience and extensive knowledge of HTML/HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP & responsive web development. Being up to date on current trends and techniques in the front-end community is a must. 


  • Create, update, and maintain responsive web site templates using HTML/HTML5, CSS3, PHP and JavaScript from existing and new designs, for use with existing Craft CMS websites. 
  • Diagnose issues to improve the functionality of websites built on the Craft CMS and related frameworks.
  • Identify and implement new website tools to improve the user experience and enhance visual elements of data presentation.
  • Participate in design discussions to help shape and implement design ideas.
  • Perform daily or near daily content updates to include light design work. 

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years in a front-end developer role or equivalent experience, 
  • Portfolio or samples of past work and projects,
  • Understanding of the entire web development process, with an emphasis on front end design and development,
  • Solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and various content management systems,
  • Ability to interpret and implement web designs,
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with relevant staff members,
  • Willingness to troubleshoot and solve complex problems,
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines,
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing instructions and requirements,
  • Familiarity with national security issues is preferred but not required.
