America’s problem is much bigger than TikTok

China watchers are waiting to see how, and whether, Chinese company ByteDance sells its wildly popular social media app TikTok to a U.S. buyer by Sept. 15, as the Trump administration has demanded. ByteDance’s billionaire founder, Zhang Yiming, is under immense pressure to sell given U.S. promises to ban the app, and the tens of billions of dollars a sale could fetch. But last week, Beijing changed its export controls to cover the valuable algorithm driving TikTok’s recommendations.
