President-elect Donald Trump named David Shulkin on Wednesday to head the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Shulkin currently serves as the head of the VA’s health-care system and has extensive experience in the private health-care sector but isn’t himself a military veteran. If confirmed, he will be the first nonveteran to head the sprawling department.

Mr. Trump announced the appointment at his first press conference since becoming president-elect.

“We looked long and hard, we interviewed at least 100 people, some good, some not so good, but we had a lot of talent,” Mr. Trump said when he announced the nomination. “He’s fantastic, he’s fantastic, he will do truly a great job. One of the commitments I’ve made is that we’re going to straighten out the whole situation for our veterans.”
