Pentagon Warned Over Impact of Defence Cuts
The US military’s ability to carry out its global strategy will be placed “at high risk” if the defence budget is cut by more than $550bn over the next decade, according to a new report by the Center for a New American Security.
The warning comes as a bipartisan congressional “supercommittee” considers how to cut $1,500bn from total government spending over the next decade. If it can not agree on the cuts before November 23, the Pentagon faces a $500bn automatic reduction to its budget over the next 10 years, in addition to the $350bn already agreed.
