Research Areas

Carisa Nietsche is an adjunct fellow with the Transatlantic Security Program at the Center for a New American Security and an expert on the transatlantic relationship, U.S.-Europe-China relations, and European and Arctic security. She is also a Senior Analyst on the Geo-technology team at Eurasia Group, focusing on digital infrastructure and telecommunications.

Previously, she was an Arctic Policy Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense, where she advised senior leadership on Arctic defense policy, Arctic allied cooperation, and Greenland policy.

Prior to DoD, she served as an Associate Fellow for the Transatlantic Security program at the Center for a New American Security. She also held positions at the Brookings Institution, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, U.S. Department of State, European Parliament, and International Republican Institute. Her analysis has appeared in Politico Europe, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the BBC, among others.

Nietsche earned her MA in German and European studies from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and her BA from the University of Texas at Austin in government and Plan II honors.
