As Trump Reshapes AI Policy, Here’s How He Could Protect America’s AI Advantage
Trump is overhauling the government’s approach to AI policy at a pivotal moment for the United States. As researchers project the possibility of human-level AI within the next decade, America’s leadership position is precarious. China is working aggressively to narrow the capability gap, investing massive resources and undertaking covert actions to bypass export controls and to steal sensitive AI secrets.
In an op-ed for TIME Magazine, Janet Egan, Paul Scharre and Vivek Chilukuri argue that to maintain U.S. AI leadership, the Trump Administration should:
- Cut through regulatory bottlenecks to expand domestic computing power and energy infrastructure.
- Work with the private sector to set risk-proportionate security standards for leading AI developers and data centers.
- Strengthen American AI leadership and influence internationally through strategic AI deals with international partners.
- Instead of gutting the AI Safety Institute, refocus its talent towards the most critical national security capabilities and risks.
- Ensure that advanced AI capabilities support U.S. national security, rather than uplift the capabilities of adversaries.
The next few years will be decisive. The nation that leads in AI will shape the trajectory of the most transformative technology of our era. President Trump has an opportunity to solidify the U.S. advantage and ensure the AI future supports democratic values and America’s interests.
