Foreign trade is a boon for San Antonio
A couple of years ago, Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, traveled to Japan and South Korea, two of the United States’ most important strategic and economic partners. Castro reportedly used the trip to reiterate San Antonio’s strong ties to East Asia, with investment from Japanese businesses such as Toyota contributing to the city’s rejuvenation and growth. International engagement like this has brought jobs and opportunity to Texans in San Antonio and across the state.
This progress is under threat, however, by a president so eager to find enemies abroad that he has directed his contempt at our allies as often as our rivals.
Toyota’s investments in San Antonio brought the city billions of dollars and thousands of jobs, but they are just one example of how strong partnerships in Asia and around the world have made Texans’ lives better. Last year, the San Antonio region alone exported $16 billion of goods and services to buyers all around the world — equal to 15 percent of the city’s entire economy.
