Feb 9, 2023
9:00am to 10:00am ET

Watch:

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) was established in 2015 as the political and governance wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to provide political representation and re-establish stability in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). Since its inception the SDC has worked to establish local and representative governance structures for the people of northeast Syria.

On February 9, 2023, CNAS hosted a virtual event featuring a conversation with Executive Committee President of the SDC Ms. Elham Ahmed hosted by Jonathan Lord, Senior Fellow and Director of the Middle East Security Program at CNAS. This conversation addressed the recent devastating earthquake in the region, the partnership between the United States and the SDC in the AANES, persistent challenges stemming from ISIS’ physical and ideological presence in the region, threats to stability posed by regional actors, and the prospects for increased economic opportunity and growth.
