Advancing U.S.-Malaysia Security Cooperation in a Changing Environment

Research Associate Alexander Sullivan examines the growing relationship between the United States and Malaysia in "Advancing U.S.-Malaysia Security Cooperation in a Changing Environment." Mr. Sullivan declares that President Barack Obama's trip to Malaysia in April 2014 sparked the beginning of the construction of a comprehensive partnership between the two countries.

The author notes that Malaysia-U.S. relations are maturing at a critical juncture for both U.S. strategic rebalancing toward and within Asia, and for Malaysia’s quest to secure and build upon its developmental gains of recent decades. To be enduring and sustainable, security cooperation must be structured to address Malaysian concerns.
