The War on Terror After Iraq

The first speaker in the Voices from the Field series, Dr. David Kilcullen, recently returned from Baghdad, where he was Senior Counterinsurgency Advisor to the Commanding General, Multi-National Force — Iraq.

Prior to service in Iraq, he was Chief Strategist in the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, U.S. Department of State, serving on loan to the United States Government from the Australian government.

Before joining the State Department, Dr. Kilcullen served 22 years as an infantry officer in the Australian Army, specializing in counterinsurgency and unconventional warfare. Following 9/11, he has worked with military, paramilitary, police and other government agencies in the Global War on Terrorism, including service in field operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province, the Horn of Africa, Indonesia and Thailand.

Dr. Kilcullen’s remarks, entitled “The War on Terror After Iraq,” centered on a broad conception of security threats and opportunities that is firmly grounded in the national interest.
