Virtual Roundtable: A Conversation on Race in the Military

Nov 17, 2020
12:00pm to 1:15pm ET

On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted the third event in a multi-part discussion series on race in the military. Moderators Bishop Garrison and CNAS Adjunct Senior Fellow Dr. Jason Dempsey led a conversation featuring individuals across the Air Force focusing on the Air Force's efforts to address diversity and inclusion through fostering honest conversations, messaging the importance of inclusion, and building the next generation of leaders. Panelists included Lt Gen James "Jim" Slife, Commander, Air Force Special Operations Command; Lt Col Myron Chivis, Student at the National War College; Maj Alea Nadeem, Defense Fellow and Air Force Women’s Initiative Team Chief; and Cadet Mark Johnson, United States Air Force Academy.

Recordings of the first event on individuals' lived experiences and the second event featuring leaders' perspectives can be found online. This series is a continuation of the MVS program's longstanding dedication to enhancing understanding of traditionally underserved populations in the military and veteran space, as shown by our women veteran author series, partnership with the Athena Leadership Project and research on women in combat, and Minority Veteran Needs Assessment. It will be accompanied by an increased number of pieces in our Supporting the Military Community commentary series focusing specifically on issues of diversity and inclusion.
