New CNAS Report: "Protecting the Protectors: Preventing and Mitigating Domestic Violent Extremism in the Military, Veteran, & Law Enforcement Communities"

Washington, December 6, 2022—Today, the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) released a new report, "Protecting the Protectors: Preventing and Mitigating Domestic Violent Extremism in the Military, Veteran, and Law Enforcement Communities," from authors Carrie Cordero, Katherine Kuzminski, Arona Baigal, and Josh Campbell.

The report reviews military, veteran, and law enforcement efforts to counter domestic violent extremism (DVE) in their communities.

The authors researched three processes in the professional lifecycle for the identification and management of DVE within the military, veteran, and law enforcement communities:

  1. Recruitment and screening, focusing on the ways in which relevant departments and agencies screen for domestic extremist affiliation and radicalization, specifically the potential for engaging in violence;
  2. Current personnel management policies and practices, examining existing policies used to identify and mitigate DVE within the ranks to pinpoint existing gaps and tensions; and
  3. Transition and post-service outreach and support, identifying opportunities to mitigate the appeal of DVE organizations to those who have already transitioned out of service.

The research aims to move the public debate forward by proposing a set of recommendations to assist these communities in developing initiatives to prevent and mitigate against DVE.
