2008 Afghanistan A to Z Guide
Last year, a friend passed me a copy of the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit's A to Z Guide. It was enormously helpful in understanding everything from the architecture of the Afghan government to some of the larger NGOs working in different provinces (and for contact information). AREU has now released the 2008 version of its guide, and I highly recommend it to all ISAF and CSTC-A officers and NCOs as well as workers in other government agencies and the aid community. Have an interpreter or someone else pick you up a $10 spiral bound copy in Kabul if you don't have the bandwidth to download it (Dari and Pashto copies are free and are useful to ANA and ANP commanders). AREU also has a lot of relevant and timely scholarly work on Afghanistan which can be accessed at their website.
