Captain Arthur E. Karell is currently an Af/Pak Hand, a Joint Chiefs of Staff program to train and deploy a cadre of regional counterinsurgency and language experts. He holds an out-of-theater billet as a research fellow at the Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia, where he has worked on issues relating to village stability operations and cultural narratives.

Captain Karell deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 as a rifle platoon commander with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. His platoon secured the Now Zad district center in Helmand Province and established Forward Operating Base Cafferata. He then deployed to the western Pacific as the boat raid company executive officer in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in 2010.

Captain Karell holds a juris doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in Government and certificate in Latin American Studies from Harvard University. Captain Karell is a native of Arlington, Virginia and lives in Washington D.C.
