Mattis says Trump ‘tries to divide us’ in stinging rebuke

Jim Mattis, a retired general and former defense secretary, castigated Donald Trump as an immature president making “a mockery” of the constitution, as he joined a chorus of retired military officers who have slammed the president for his response to the George Floyd protests.

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us,” Mr. Mattis wrote in The Atlantic. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.”
