The New Middle East: Constructing Regional Partnerships and Seizing Emerging Opportunities

"The New Middle East: Constructing Regional Partnerships and Seizing Emerging Opportunities,” is a new CNAS project exploring a potential American-led Middle East security architecture. The year-long project will examine and recommend how the United States can develop multilateral Middle East relationships to enhance the region’s security and stability as the global partner of choice.

CNAS experts will explore the advancements this new framework could have on collective security in the maritime, ballistic missile defense, and intelligence sharing domains. Jonathan Lord, Senior Fellow and Director of the CNAS Middle East Security Program, will head the project.

"The 2022 National Defense Strategy calls for the reorientation of U.S. military resources to prepare for contingencies with Russia and China," said Lord. "To allow for this strategic shift while mitigating risk, the U.S. must work with its Middle East allies and partners to build an effective regional security architecture. I am delighted to lead this important research effort, which will lay the foundation for such an architecture."

The project is made possible with the generous support of the Jeffrey M. Talpins Foundation.
