Luke Hartig is Deputy Director for Counterterrorism Operations in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (SO/LIC). In this role, Mr. Hartig is the lead advisor to SO/LIC leadership on the legal, operational, political and intelligence aspects of U.S. counterterrorism activities in the Middle East.

Prior to covering the Middle East, Mr. Hartig was the lead for Africa counterterrorism. He has also worked on Iraq and Afghanistan reconstruction and counterinsurgency issues for OSD. Mr. Hartig joined OSD as a Presidential Management Fellow and completed rotations to the Counterinsurgency Training Center in Afghanistan and the Office of Management and Budget.

Prior to joining OSD, Mr. Hartig worked in the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. He has also worked on security issues at the Government Accountability Office and Good Harbor Consulting.

Mr. Hartig served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala from 2003-2005, where he developed water and sanitation systems for rural villages. He holds a Master’s in Public Policy in International Security and Political Economy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a B.A. in International Relations from Boston University. Mr. Hartig and his wife Rachel are the proud parents of a newborn son.
