Statement from CNAS Vice President Paul Scharre on Chinese Data Restriction

Statement from Paul Scharre, Vice President and Director of Studies at the Center for a New American Security. Quotes may be used with attribution. Please contact Shai Korman at comms@cnas.org for interview requests or questions.

"New reporting from The Wall Street Journal indicates that, in response to research published by the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and other think tanks, China has restricted access to open-source information from China. We are disappointed to hear that Beijing is taking steps to control the free flow of information. Transparency is essential in increasing mutual understanding and managing the risks of competition between the United States and China.

"CNAS remains committed to pursuing its work undaunted. We will continue to conduct fact-based, objective analysis on the most pressing national security issues. The Center’s independent, bipartisan research informs both policymakers and the public. Our research will continue to include analysis of Chinese policies and practices. CNAS has, for fifteen years, developed bold and innovative national security solutions based on rigorous research. Despite Beijing's effort to diminish our ability, this vital work will continue."
