On November 12, the Center for a New American Security’s Energy, Economics, and Security (EES) Program hosted a private roundtable on “U.S.-Japan Trade and Economic Security Cooperation on Semiconductors.” EES convened a group of experts to assess the opportunities and challenges facing future U.S.-Japan cooperation on establishing secure and resilient semiconductor supply chains. Participants explored how Washington and Tokyo could leverage commitments in the recent framework trade agreement and U.S.-Japan Technology Prosperity Deal to bolster their semiconductor industries. They also examined the potential impact of future U.S. tariffs on semiconductors arising from the Commerce Department’s ongoing Section 232 investigation.
